I think my address was sold, and that's how I ended up on Delia's Mailing list!
Since then, I've investigated the website.
My first purchase experience was not a positive one.
I made an order. Two weeks later, I hadn't heard anything. I cancelled my order via the on-line customer service.
I received no response.
I checked my Delia's account status and my email on a daily basis.
A week after I sent my cancel-order request, I learned from the shipment status, that the order had been processed and shipped. I still hadn't had any response to my cancellation request.
This spurred me to phone the company. When I phoned, I learned that the only way to cancel an order is by phone. No email cancellations are accepted. This is why my order was shipped, despite my emailed cancellation request.
I told them that if I had received an email response more immediately...perhaps one informing me to phone them, rather than email them -- I would've had time to cancel my order. But now -- it was too late. The only way to return my order: accept the fact that I had to pay the shipping fee for the package to reach me -- and I'd have to pay the same shipping fee to send it back.
While the website does state:
"If you need to make an immediate change to your order or cancel your order, please call our customer service department toll free at 1-888-5-DELIAS (1-888-533-5427) 7 days a week, 8am to midnight EST. A customer service representative will assist you. For all other questions or concerns, you can send us an email at help@delias.com."
I feel that it should explicitly state that cancellations are ONLY accepted via telephone.
When I discovered this, I sent a follow-up email to Delia's, sharing the above sentiment. It is now months after the incident, and I have never received an email response from the shop.
This is in striking contrast with other on-line shops, such as Urbn.com, gap.com, marksandspencers.com (British store), and others, where I have always received a fast response and solution to any problems that have arisen.
As far as the products sold at Delias -- for the most part, they look like cheap knock-offs of the latest trends. HOWEVER -- I can always find at least one or two items, that are either exactly the same as, or very similar (in both style and quality) to products I've found at Urbn.com or Freepeople.com. (Eg. Crochet Snuggle Slide on Freepeople.com matched the same exact shoe on Delias -- except the Delias shoe was $10 cheaper.)
Also -- I always seem to find at least one thing that is completely unique. Like the HELLO KITTY EXPERIENCE Tee. As in, a Jimmy Hendrix Hello Kitty! That's right: Hello Kitty with a guitar and an afro! It's the perfect gift for Hello Kitty lover (which a close friend of mine, happens to be!).
The other tees are very similar to urbn.com style (some have flower prints, some have odd sayings, some have band names -- perfect for the Brooklyn hipster in all of us!), and the price is about the same, unless you take advantage of the "Buy any 2 and save $10" deal on Delias.com.
Given my bad experience with their on-line service, I hate to shop there. But given, the uniqueness of a few items at a good price, I can't rule it out.
