Classic Consoles-Price, Selection, and Entertainment

Sep 06 '01

The Bottom Line There's a few basic things you should look for in a classic console

It's funny that even with today's modern, powerful video game systems, the demand for the older consoles is large. Why exactly is that? Because people generally don't like to pay $50 for a game that they'll get bored with in a week. No people like to get their money's worth when it comes to video games. So I'm going to talk about the 3 most important aspects when searching for a game console: The price, the selection of games to choose from, and the overall entertainment value.

Price

Whether it be a NES, SNES, Genesis, Atari, Master System, or any classic console, the price is an important matter. For the console itself, you really don't want to be paying more than $50. Especially when these systems can be found on auction sites like ebay dirt cheap. For a used gaming console anywhere from $10-$40 is a reasonable price.

But the console itself isn't the biggest hit to your wallet. The games can actually be very costly. For the NES, Atari, or other early consoles, a good price for most games is $1-$6. You can probably find a lot of older NES games for $.50 or $1 at yard sales or resale shops. For Genesis or SNES era consoles, games will probably range from $5-$25. A lot of these are good buys for the decent graphics and long replay value.

As I mentioned before, some games can become a bit pricey. Currently the NES's Dragon Warrior sells for about $.50. Good deal right? Well if you want to buy the sequels, Dragon Warrior 5 will run you about $50. An unplayed Final Fantasy might go for $30 or $40. Most of the mass produced games will go for a few bucks, but the more rare and more popular ones will go higher than games for new consoles.

Game Selection

Before buying your console, it's good to know what type of games are available. I think it would be best if I simply listed what games you can find for some of the most popular consoles.

Atari Systems-A lot of old style arcade games. The very basic in graphics, point-and-shoot type games are available and easy to find.

NES-Probably the largest selection of games. Decent graphics for most along with basic controls and action. Most games are easy to find but there's a ton of Japanese games that, with the assistance of translated text (can be found free online), that are considered to have stories as good as today's games.

Genesis, SNES-A wide selection of games from sports, RPG, virtually any genre you want. Great RPG's like the Phantasy Star series for the NES and Illusion of Gaia for the SNES, with improved graphics, would be acceptable on a Playstation. There are a lot of bad games though, I suggest reading reviews at game sites before buying.

Overall Entertainment

This really depends on what you're looking for. If you want a variety of cheap games, and don't mind bad graphics, the NES is for you. If you want to be nostalgic an Atari console might be fun, but is really obsolete. If you like great RPG's with decent graphics, the Genesis is probably for you. If you want fighting games along with the classic Mario series, the SNES is perfect.

All consoles will fill the needs of different people. If you research some games before you buy, then there's months of entertainment waiting for you in the classic console world.
