The Bottom Line I can't do everything correctly and I can't always be there for my children; but God can. There is one thing that ALWAYS helps - Every night, I PRAY.

You commented in your article that you knew a girl, in her first year of college, did not do drugs, alcohol, worked hard for her grades and was considered to be an all-around "good kid". You also indicated that her mother acted as if she did not trust her. I can only assume that by your comments you were referring to her parents questioning where she was going, who she was with, what she would be doing and when she was expected to return. Did it ever occur to you that the way this girl has evolved into this "all-around good kid" was because her parents took an active role in her life and actually did what parents should - teach their children to behave responsibly. The only way to teach children to be responsible is to show them what is expected of them. This includes insisting that teens keep their parents informed of their actions and where-abouts. Parents must also monitor activities, behavior and friends and take appropriate action, when indicated. This is a parents job. You were correct in also explaining that teens do not need too much freedom. They are not adults. There is a reason that young teens can not vote or sign contracts. They still need guidance. It's up to us, as parents to provide this. If that teen appears to be doing the"right things" the parents must be doing the right thing. Judge by results.
