If used right, Roms are the best way to test video games before you buy

This was a decent article, exaept for one incorrect 'fact' you mentioned. It is a common myth that it's legal to download a ROM if you delete it within 24 hours. Game ROMs are considered software under US copyright law, and the rules for software 'backups' are as follows; you are allowed to have one backup of any peice of software, for archival purposes. If you ever use this backup, you must destroy your original copy. There is no mention in copyright law about deleteing or destroying the backup after 24 hours.

This is a glaring error that invalidates this entire article. Had you said that yes, downloading ROMs are almost entirely illegal, but that most people don't care and you won't really get caught, then I really wouldn't have a problem with it because that's the truth. In all honesty, the manufacturers of these 'classic' games don't make any money from them anymore anyway (since they aren't making the games anymore) so there isn't much basis for legal action. In any case, who cares about some kid with a couple dozen ROMs on his computer. The truth is, ROMs are a fun way to play old games that are hard to find, and nobody really cares that it's illegal.

don't take any notice of that guy.
Thanks for a good opinion...I'd heard of emulators before but never knew how they worked.
Thanks for your article.

You should have included more details about the emulators that you have tried out. There are numerous programs for SNES ROMS, Genesis ROMS, etc. It would have been better than just mentioning one web site with ROMS.

There's a place for emulator editorials, this isn't it. You get SH for a lack of information about classic consoles--emulators aren't consoles, they're software.
