I chose L.A. Weight Loss because I had several friends who had dieting success with the program. I even have one friend who has battled her excess weight since we were in elementary school. This is the first time in our lives that she has lost so much weight, kept it off and feels healthy.
Personally I had success on the Atkins diet. However, as I have gotten older, my metabolism has obviously slowed and with Atkins some of the weight crept back. Also, I personally never felt really healthy on such a stringent low carb/high protein/high fat regimen.
I have only been a member of L.A. Weight Loss for a month. However, I have already lost the 2 pounds per week. I feel very healthy. The selling point for me was the accountability factor. I have had nothing but positive experiences thus far with the counselors there or the program itself. I like the food diary and the fact that I like checking off that I have had my eight glasses of water on a particular day for example. The plan they gave me is very similar to the plan for my height and weight on the FDA's website.
Regarding the extras - obviously a business tries to market their products to make money. Perhaps the other reviewer went to a really horrible location. However, I have not experienced any of the hard sell techniques. I am self-employed and do not have a lot of disposable income. Fortunately, not only was I able to set up a payment plan for the enrollement fee, but I told them I would have to buy my bars a box at a time. If customers do have extra money, there are lots of options for buying the bars, etc. in bulk for a substantial savings. Also, I find the bars to be very good and what I spend on the bars I am not spending on expensive lunches. One must balance their own budget and adjust for things they need. It is all a matter of priority and also being able to say "no" when necessary - just like at a car dealership. Regarding the exercise aspect, I like to exercise at least three times per week. I would never let anyone tell me to stop exercising because muscle weighs more than fat. It is not good to lose muscle mass. If there is any question about that or someone tells you the opposite, do not listen but check with your doctor. With anything in life, employ a little common sense and instinct...
Ultimately none of these diet centers would need to be in business if everyone in the world had the will power to lose weight sensibly all by themselves. What a Utopia that would be! I think everyone should speak with their doctor, find a program that works for them and go from there. Unfortunately for the other reviewer this obviously was not the plan for her although she admits her daughter has lost weight. As for me, it is working and I am quite pleased. Even having learning one healthy technique that I was not employing makes it worthwhile. I would not rule out L.A. Weight Loss as a program to consider.
Good luck!
One reader asked some additional questions so here is a little more information...
The only prepackaged foods are the LA Snacks (which are not required, but strongly suggested). These are the bars I was talking about that I find tasty. All the other foods are things you would buy for yourself. They provide you with a menu plan kit. Which one you are given dictates how many servings of protein, starches, fat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables, etc. you should take in on a daily basis. It offers different types of foods in each group. I found this useful in many regards. For example, though I buy groceries, there were many vegetables I never even usually considered. I have forced myself to experience variety and have been pleased. As I indicated, they allowed me to have a payment plan for the enrollment fee (I am stretching it out over three months). The total cost will depend on how much weight you will need to lose (2 pounds per week average; 6 weeks stabilization; 52 weeks maintenance). The cost is currently $7/week unless they are having a special in your area. The bars (LA Lites/Snacks) are $29 a box. You will need a box per week unless you opt not to do the bars, etc. However, they do have specials from time to time and if you can buy in bulk you can really save. Therefore you could feasibly not have anything else to pay if you can pay for your bars/enrollment fee all at once. Like I said, I am on a payment plan for the enrollment fee and I am buying my bars a box at a time. I don't mind, though I used to throw so much money away on a weekly basis on take out lunch. Just do not let anyone force you to do any more than your own finances can bear.
As far as exercise goes, I have been doing exercise for years. Even at my heaviest I stayed pretty toned. I think organizations like the President's Council on Physical Fitness recommend exercise three times per week for at least 30 minutes (it may have even increased). Again, check with your doctor and see what they recommend based on all the pertinent factors.
Hoped this additional information helped!
