Enetbot allows you to send and recieve mail to/from your AOL account while using MS Outlook or Outlook Express.

I am one of those folks who pays AOL 5 dollars a month for 3 hours of access, but who has another Internet provider that I mainly use. I wanted a way to check my AOL email account without actually logging in to AOL and using their awful mail editor to do it.

Enter enetbot. This 3rd party program will check your AOL email and then load it into MS Outlook or Outlooks Express for you to read and respond to.
I have had little problem getting it to work and log in to AOL (although sometimes it does lag or timeout) and have found it very useful.

Please note that you must give the program your AOL id and password for it to work. If the makers of the program were malicious then they could use that information to really mess with your AOL account. However, I have had no problems like that far!

Anyway, if you are in a similar situation to me or would prefer to use Outlook Express instead of your AOL email editor, then give this one a try.
