Pros: Pretty lights and buttons. Might make a good source of electrical parts for experiments?
Cons: I expected more out of a $400 shelf system, especially a name brand like Sony.
The Bottom Line: I recommend you avoid this product. Two stars because it sounded great when it worked.

| motoman22's Full Review: Sony MHC-RXD6AV Bookshelf Audio System |
I bought this system about 5 years ago as a home theatre solution, it's been sitting in the closet now for about 4 years. I set it up using high-quality Monster cable, a surge protector, Monster shielded component patch cords and installed two fans for forced-ventilation in it's cabinet. It was properly setup and then an extra mile or two was invested (not that it did much good.) The CD tray lasted about a week. I could still play CDs through my DVD player and the sound was quite impressive so I didn't consider it worth my while to seek warranty work. About two months later, the rear surround speakers started to crackle. That weekend they went out entirely (only faint static.) I had already given away my 'old' system so this is all I had to use, ended up taking the surround speakers out and losing the theatre function entirely. Over the next few months both cassette units went out, the AM tuner died, the volume adjustment went berzerk, and the center channel started fading in and out on it's own. Mind you, the unit was used in absolutely optimal conditions and only by the person that paid for it. It's environment could have played no part in it's demise.
My nephew wants surround sound for his X-Box playing so I pulled it out of the closet earlier this week and tried to seek repair through Sony, who now claims to have never heard of this model. If I were them, I'd deny association too. Between this unit and my bad experience with Sony mobile electronics, my opinion of Sony is somewhere between low and totally gone.
