| dlstewart's Full Review: Ziploc Storage Bags |
I am the first to admit that I need lots of different storage devices. Sometimes, though, Sterilite or Rubbermaid containers are too big, or I need a flexible container. Thats where Ziploc Storage Bags come in handy.
Description
These Ziploc bags come in a variety of sizes and styles. All the bags are constructed from clear plastic. They have a big Ziploc logo in white across one side of the bag. There is also a white rectangle where the date and contents of the bag can be listed.
Some of the bags have the traditional Ziploc zipper closure. One side of the zipper is pink and the other side of the zipper is blue. When these two colors are zipped together to close the bag, the seal turns purple.
Another type of Ziploc Storage Bag is called the Easy Zipper. This bag has a white tab that slides across the top of the bag to close the two zipper halves. The Easy Zipper quart storage bag that I am looking at has pink zippers on both sides with a white tab that runs across the top of the bag in order to open and close it.
Ziploc has also recently introduced a new zipper to the storage bag family. This is called a Double Zipper. The manufacturer says that this seal is their tightest seal yet. Ziploc Storage Bags are microwavable.
Sizes
Quart 7" x 8" bag
25 bag box / 50 bag box
Gallon 10 9/16" x 11" bag
20 bag box / 40 bag box
Two Gallon 13" x 15 5/8" bag
12 bag box (Double Zipper bag not available in this size)
My Experiences
I use Ziploc Storage Bags to hold a lot of different items. They are great to have around when I need to store small items in a flexible package ... particularly if the package has to be squeezed into a drawer or other small space.
I like it that these bags are see-through. They also have a place where I can write the date or a description of the contents. I have written on these bags with ball point pen (blue and black ink) as well as with a black Sharpie permanent marker.
The zipper seal keeps the bag closed. The children prefer the Ziploc Easy Zipper closure. For them, it is like zippering a piece of clothing shut. Just slide the zipper tab across the top of the bag. It is easy to do, and the bag stays sealed.
The traditional Ziploc closure can be tricky for those with hand problems. My father definitely is challenged when it comes to marrying the two halves of the bag together to form the seal. The only time I have problems is when the bags have been used a number of times. The seal will begin to weaken, becoming difficult to shut. I tend to reuse bags; its ecologically sound and saves money.
These bags are constructed from sturdy plastic, too. During regular use, the plastic stays new looking. If a bag falls to a hard floor and is stepped on so that the foot scuffs the bag across the floor, then the bag might show some scratches. Otherwise, these bags are excellent at retaining their shape and continue to look nice.
According to the manufacturers website, these bags can be used in the microwave. I have never used one of these bags in the microwave. In case you are interested, the instructions are to open the zipper-lock 1" to vent the bag.
Ways I Use the Bags
Here is a partial listing of ways I have used Ziploc Storage Bags.
Kitchen keep cookie cutter set pieces together, hold the vegetable peeler, cover a small grater so the sharp edges dont bang against other objects in the drawer, store open packages of crackers or other foods that go in a cupboard or refrigerator
Bathroom the kids love the colored lip balms that come in the tubes and each child has their own bag so there is no fighting, also great for storing open bags of cotton balls
Garage / Workshop when I assemble something with screws, I place the leftover hardware in a Ziploc bag and label it
Sewing Room all sorts of craft items ... everything from beads and sequins to trims and zippers
Office store extra pens that come free from vendors, hold spare computer parts
Totebag hold candies and snacks during trips, store wet bathing suits in the zipped bag
Purchasing
I usually buy these storage bags at my local grocery store, pharmacy or department store. I look for the sales and use coupons to lower their cost. Here are some average prices:
Quart Bags 50 bags for $4.69
Gallon Bags 20 bags for $2.69 / 40 bags for $3.99
Two Gallon Bags 12 bags for $3.49
Summary
Ziploc Storage Bags can always be found in my kitchen drawer. They come in handy for so many reasons ... and are easy to label and stash in a drawer or cupboard. I like it that the bags can be reused, too. They make my dollar stretch just a bit more.
