I'd give you a big 'ol hug if I could. Thanks for this one.

I'm still having difficulty talking about what I saw that day, having witnessed the attack from ground zero. I finally was able to write it out earlier today, but I'm far too tired to share my thoughts under this topic. (I simply posted my story under the NYC category) When I eventually do share my opinion on what people can do to help, I hope to write something even half as eloquent and inspiring as this piece.

As I was walking north and trying to escape from the madness at the World Trade Center, I saw some people arguing on the street. It escalated to a full blown fight within seconds, and a woman next to me commented with disgust "Haven't we all been through enough today with out fighting amongst ourselves?"

Hug your kids a little tighter tonight.

Love Ryan.

Your editorial stands as a very real piece of truth. It is obvious that you are just as "American" as anyone born here, years don't do pride justice. Thank you for sharing and speaking out; if everyone followed your advice the country would certainly be much better off.

crying. What a beautiful epinion.

You are absolutley right on!!!!!!!
Be patient. I have faith in America and in the good Lord. I live daily with such ignorance. I constantly hear the "N" word and spic this and that. It makes my skin crawl and my stomach turn. I try to teach them. Sometimes I get through.

Just the other night, I was deeply saddened when I saw two ex co-workers on NBC. We were Computer Programmer's together for years. One was a Christian, the other a Jew. Yet they were best friends. One was paralyzed. The other would not leave his side. I was very friendly for years with the paraplegic's nurse. I was thrilled when I learned that she survived. I have lost contact with her but would be so happy if I could just say, "Hello. I am so happy that you are still with us." When they interviewed her on this show, a person that I was with yelled out, "Yeah, sure. The Ni#$er Bit#$ ran out on him." I went in the bathroom, sick. How dare this ignorant man say such a thing about one of the most dedicated, beautiful human beings that I have ever encountered in my life.

Be rest assured that I am on your team and you my dear are more of a true American than third and fourth generation people that I know.

Be rest assured that education of the ignorant is part of my daily itinerary.

Thanks!!!!!

Thank you so much for urging compassion! It's been really hard for me for the last week or so to hear nothing but calls for war and revenge. I've had to listen to coworkers spout off about "bombing the hell" out of the Middle East, and hear about them making remarks about having trouble seeing someone in a turban (so ignorant are they, that they don't realize that the turban is a symbol of the Sikh faith). These comments have made me almost ashamed of my fellow Americans, even though I've been proud of the way they've stepped up to the plate in helping the victims.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me this ray of hope!!! :-)

I too have felt very (Reply to this comment)

ashamed to be part of the human race lately.

The president of Canadian Federation of Nurses asked Canadian Leaders and the public to wear a little sticker for a day that read "I am Mulsim Canadian."

I live in an ethnic neighbourhood, that has had a record number of police and fire engines around lately, and I'm embarassed to admit, I was afraid to wear the sticker for fear of being lashed out at myself.

I can't imagine the fear any person of middle-east desent must feel walking down the street, or sending their children to school. It is a shame we have learned nothing from history.

Thank you so much for this review, it is the best one I have read in this category yet.

Nice Essay.. (Reply to this comment)

And I can certainly empathize. While working at the bank, I heard the same epithets, ad nauseam, all day long. I understand people being angry, afraid and outraged, but don't they see that history will repeat itself if we aren't more responsible?

Great job, enjoyable read and thanks for opening our eyes just a little bit this day.

I thank you with much sincerity for your words. Most of the stores are sold out of flags so we decided to go to Kinkos and make a thousand color copies of the American flag that appeared in our daily newspaper. We handed them out at grocery stores, post offices and in front of 7-11. Most people dug into their pockets to give us change - thinking we were collecting for the cause - and a few of them broke down into tears when we told them the flags were free for the taking.

I only hope that the coming days, weeks and years will hold this admiration of the flag, and what it represents, as a constant symbol of unity in America.

May whatever God you worship protect you in the coming days and keep you from harms way.

Humbled... (Reply to this comment)
by pogomom
Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us, through this essay and all of your reviews.

This past week has given all of us pause for thought and introspection. Your thoughts, so heartfelt and so honest, spoke volumes for many of us. We wonder how a world so filled with humanity can host such menacing individuals. We look at the result of some truly heinous acts and know, deep in our hearts, that no human being could have perpetrated such a vicious act of destruction.

I grew up hearing the words, "Never Forget!" echoed in relation to the Holocaust and other crimes against our fellow men and women. For six thousand years, those words were repeated as a wake up call to those who found solace in leaving the past to historians.

Sadly, for centuries before the Holocaust and for the decades since, those two words only have meaning to those whose families and loved ones have fallen victim to the menace of the day. Just teaching our children the truth is not enough; living the truth is not enough; answering for our ancestors and keeping pride in our ancestry may be the only answer.

Violence begets violence; for those who feel giving their lives in the name of religion or for the good grace of their leaders is honorable - there are no answers other than what they already know. If we are to have a future (and at this point in time - that is questionable) it is our children who must break the chain.

Racism, bigotry, intolerance and hatred are not inborn. You are right, our young imitate what they see at home and within our academic environs. We need to begin, yesterday, and carry it through to every facet of our lives.

Thank you for baring your soul and for giving so many of us a voice through your words.

With respect and admiration,
Helen

Our response should not be rooted in bias or revenge.

Rather we should set out to ensure that these horrific actions do not recur - in America or elsewhere.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with the community. I only wish more people have as much heart as you in this world. I have met many insecure people hiding behind their xenophobic and racist views in this world. However, it is the kind and understanding people like you who make me feel that this world is a wonderful place. I am sure the Arab-Americans are glad to have a friend such as you.

Excellent editorial (Reply to this comment)
by SurgRN911
You should be proud to lift your head as a human and an American. You have put into words what I really believe is in many hearts. At this time our emotions are so vulnerable, anger is viewed as a STRONG emotion, and when tears no longer will come, we want to be strong. Our true strength will be shown in our behavior in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. I do feel something must be done to see that nothing like this happens again. However, hate will breed more hate, we have the power and the reason to want revenge, if we seek that revenge at the risk of the innocent, are we any better than those that caused this disaster?

I was born in America, my parents were born in America. Nevertheless, at one time we were NOT Americans, at one time all of us, unless we are Native Americans, have come from other lands.

On this day I am proud to stand by your side and be an American with you.

Your editorial humbles me - it should humble other people that have made bigoted comments in this time of stress.

I would like to know the answer to that as well... how exactly does one "not look American"?

I finally ventured out yesterday, after being home for 36 hours and watching TV for about 2 dozen of those hours.

I completely agree with you about your essay. However, rather than "tolerance" of one another, we should be teaching our children how to RESPECT one another and their beliefs, livestyles, or racial differences.

It completely sickens me about the Wal-Mart visit and it sounds like parents simply are not really discussing this with their children. Instead (and as you pointed out), the are just saying things out of anger or hatred and this is being passed onto the kids.

America needs to just calm down and hug one another, especially now. Buy a flag, donate blood, give money, but for God's sakes, refrain from making remarks and judgements that will last a lifetime.

EXCELLENT ESSAY FREAK!!!!!!!!!!!! FLY YOUR FLAG PROUDLY, you ARE an American!

The world is about to change (Reply to this comment)
by grandgram
I have lived through this during Pearl Harbor. We had many people who would not trust Germans or Japanese who were living in this country. It is an emotional thing to know that war is imminent and you want to lash out. I live in the middle of the country and we don't see this kind of madness. Our outrage is with those who carried out this terrible deed.

The country will not be the same, our peaceful country will have to change to protecting itself. This is the second time such carnage has hit our country and we will all come together as we did in the 1940's. That is one thing I am sure of, lashing out at perfect strangers will subside. We all will change or I must say we better or we will be just like these people who carried this out.

Thanks for your review and we welcome you as one of us. God Bless our Freedom Country where you can say things and not be arrested. We can always admonish those who say such dreadful things against a country, religion or people.

I've been walled up at home with my flu - so I've seen nothing but the news and the American Reaction to this. People are very, very angry and it is because of this unchannelled anger, things can get very dangerous for others.

I am optimistic that we will get through this and that we will find the guilty parties....but it does shock and disturb me how many more innocents will get targeted for this.

Being in Hong Kong but being an American citizen, I feel the same pains you feel. I find it shocking that there are minds in this world that would perpetrate so much suffering.

There was a picture in a newspaper here in Hong Kong of a Palestinian boy celebrating the bombing by shooting gun shots in the air.......with an AK-47! That made me cry.

Great review and I hope you can live through this time.

When we choose to attack innocent Muslims, we are no better than the monsters who did this. Please discourage violence on more innocent people. MzRizz

Please pay attention to Freak's advice below:

If I had three wishes, one of them would most definitely be that the attacks on Muslim Mosques, foreign businesses and college students would stop. These people did nothing – nor do they deserve to be harassed night and day.

You are absolutely right--I've been hearing a lot of the same kinds of comments.

The US made the same mistake after Pearl Harbor. Many Japanese-American families were torn apart and financially ruined by the relocation to internment camps during WWII. We have to learn from the past.

The group suspected of this attack is trying to wipe out American culture and policies. They would not be living here if that is their philosophy. Leave the people living in this country alone. There are many good people who are afraid unnecessarily. The knee-jerk reactions have got to stop. Remember, unless you are American-Indian, your ancestors were immigrants, too.

I just about gave this one an MH.. actually I had but after thinking it over, there really is no way I could call one review better than another in this category, especially with all the ones to come. However, I must say that you have truly hit the nail square on the head and given a unique and very enlightening point of view. This is going to be a great test of our nation's level of acceptance, and only by accepting those around us will we ever win the war against those phlegm wads who are actually responsible.

The Wal Mart scene in particular, it's disturbing to know that, and yet at the same time it's not the least bit surprising. My prayers go out to all the people who are affected by this, and I believe that we can win this. Thanks for the review, maybe you will open a few eyes out there :)
