Information is coming out... where to find it

Sep 14 '01

The Bottom Line There is a lot of information out there... not all of it is accurate. Check out reliable sources and take the information with a grain of salt.

I'm an American living abroad. I've been at the office for most of my waking hours since the event... as I work for the security department. So I've had to get most of my information online.

I don't know anybody that was in New York during the crisis, but I do have a friend that works for the Pentagon... my former boss. He's a nice guy, so I was worried when I heard it was bombed. Thankfully, he's not among the missing.

Over the past few days, I've found a few sites that can help out with information, whether it is about current events or information on my (I thought then it was possible) missing friend. Here are some of the best sites I've found.

http://www.cnn.com. Okay this is obvious. My start page is excite.com, and it is great for days when the news is boring and I want to know how my stocks are doing, but it just doesn't have the hard-core news that cnn.com does. This site is updated with new news several times a day, and I keep checking back to it.

http://www.ny.com/wtclist.html. This is a good site to find out who has been found alive. If you have a friend that worked at the World Trade Center, look on this list, which is updated fairly regularly. There had been some problems with people incorrectly reporting people safe, but there is now a correction page that you can go to if you see information that is inaccurate, so you can add to it.

http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/13/victims.list.ap/ . You can get to the victims list off of the main CNN.com page, and if I understand their web page naming conventions correctly, this list was updated on the 13th. You probably want to go to the equivalent page of the main CNN site, but I am listing this here because it is a good link to follow. This lists the victims, a list you DON'T want to see your friends on. The Pentagon has released its list, where I found out that my friend was okay, and it is here, as well as all the plane passengers, and some of the victims listed from the World Trade Center (a small fraction). For the very latest, go to this link from CNNs main page.

http://www.google.com/news/ . Google.com? I stumbled across this great link while doing a search for the Pentagon. From the main page they have a link to this page. It's great. It has links to all the other news sites which I haven't mentioned here, like ABC news and MSNBC, BUT that's not the best part about this site. It has a link that says "Report that you are safe" which leads to the link below...

http://safe.millenium.berkeley.edu . No www at the front of this link. This place has 19,010 people that have reported that they are safe, as of my last look. You can do a search for people to see if they have reported that they are safe, or report that you are safe. This link also links to other lists that perform the same function, although the links they go to are not always that great. This site claims to link to the wtclist site as well. Be aware though, that people can report inaccurate information, and the information is only as good as the people reporting it.

These sites should be able to help you find out plenty of information about the bombings. They are good jumping places to other links that you might stumble across as well.
