I have been caught with the same ethically bad business practice of not allowing the user to opt out of auto renewal in the initial sign up of classmates.com, but that is not my only complaint.
I signed up for a three-month membership (the shortest I could find) to get in contact with one friend from high school. I was under the impression that it would send her an email with my message. After a week or so I did not receive a response from her. After contacting her via other means, I found that she received an email from classmates.com telling her she had a message, but it did not send her my message or even tell her whom the message was from. She would have had to sign up for a membership just to read the message. With that in mind, the option of contacting anyone via classmates.com is pretty much useless.
I was under the impression that my membership expired, and the whole useless ordeal was over when I recently saw another $15 charge from classmates.com. Apparently, it is stated in the process that it will auto renew your membership, but if I wanted auto renewal I would have signed up for monthly membership not just three months. The fact that it is not stated with an obvious check box for auto renewal, but only with directions on how to remove the auto renewal shows how ethically skewed this company is. I thought I was dealing with a reputable company, and that I was not going to be taken advantage of in the fine print, but apparently this is not a reputable company. Classmates.com offers no refund even if you have not used the service. The company basically prays on those who do not avidly review credit card charges
