while i certainly agree that (Reply to this comment)

this is a time that will find many people calling out to and leaning on the Divine ... it is NOT the time for our country to ask that we pray to only one religion's form of God
you ask why "we will let a few select groups of people take God, the bible, and prayer out of our schools"?
and it is simply because we are a country which allows people of all faiths to feel equally welcome in our public school system...
imagine how the Buddhist child would feel hearing a lecture on Jesus being the only way and only truth
imagine how the Jewish child would feel having to pray the Our Father .. or to stand silent, making him/her "different" to their peers
imagine how the Pagan child would feel reading a book/Book in class, which says "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live"
I agree that there should be the availability in our school of prayer group and religious organizations .. but it should not / CAN not be limited to only one or a few "approved" religions
if you open the door to Christian faith in our schools, you must open it as well to all other legally recognized religious groups
and it is that kettle of fish/can of worms that both the religious right and liberal left are trying so hard to avoid
i still rated your article as HR as you very articulately expressed your viewpoint

This was an absolutely beautiful epinion. I was very moved by your thoughts. I agree we all need to take God into our hearts when times are good as well as when we are in times of struggle.
Thanks again,
Anne

I Could Tell... (Reply to this comment)

you were extremely moved by all that's gone on since 7:45AM (Central, what else would you expect? :) on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. And, well you should be. We all should be. And, we all should be considering the facts, the thoughts that you've made note of in your editorial, Erik. BTW, great job, great courage, great honesty and sincerity.
I only have one problem with it all: no matter what we do, we cannot seem to be as honest as were you in your editorial. In other words, I fear for us "bringing God back" into our schools and institutions.
We take things much too literally to be trusted to allow man to choose and pay homage to his own individually chosen faith, religion, belief. WHY? Because WE always have a NEED to direct and decide what EVERYONE else thinks, believes, wants, does and needs instead of releasing, respecting and just letting God in whatever form another person (and their God, by whatever name they call HIM/HER/THEM) chooses. Therein lies the root of our hypocrisy of which you've spoken.
When we make up our minds, we forget that we did just that, made up OUR own minds. That we have no right to decide for the other fellow. Just for ourselves and our dependent minor children... that's all. When we forget this important fact, that's when we can become dangerous to the very thing that America stands for... democracy, equality, justice and liberty for us ALL. But that can only be realized when each man, woman and child feels we've gotten the benefits of those "inalienable rights".
Therefore, I think it best for us all if we just understand that God (of our own chosen mode) is always with us... if we so choose for Him/Her/Whomever to be.
Thanks for such an eloquently, candidly & truthfully expressed editorial, Erik. God bless America... and us all. And, perhaps even bless us all to truly learn to respect each other, not ideals, ideology, and idols. Take care,
Rouchelle

I agree with much of what you have said. However this topic is for helping parents help their children understand and cope with this crisis. If you expand on that area I'd be happy to reread/rate.

good call... (Reply to this comment)

During the past few days, I've seen quite a bit of the coverage on television. I'm beyond irritated by the constant urging of us to pray. I think that religion should be a personal choice and not something that the president should instruct people to do during tough times. I also think that people who are religious are smart enough to know to pray without direction from our nation's leaders. I have a few friends who do not believe in God, and I have a few others who are not Christians. They are just as upset about what happened on Tuesday than any Christian is, but since they may not pray in the same manner, does that mean that their positive thoughts and well wishes do not mean as much? I agree with you wholeheartedly that the sudden prayer push from the government is a bit out of place, and should be a constant; not at all, or if during rough spots, then all the time.
great opinion,

you put into words what many Christians are wondering about. Prayer and God should be important and sought out everyday (good or bad) not just in times of crisis.
If our country sought His will out daily, He would probably bless us beyond our belief. If it takes things like this to bring our nation to it's knees, I fear what may happen in the future. God will do what it takes to make our nation pray and honor Him. That could be very scary.
My heart goes out to everyone in our country and I am praying for a national turning back to God because so many have forgotten Him.
Nice job.

Prayer (Reply to this comment)

Bush would love to put prayer into schools. However, freedom of religion also means freedom from religion. God comes in different forms for many of us.
Very nicely written.
