Meteor Crater, Arizona -- Puts a Big Hole in your Pocket
by 4-1-1 | Sep 14 '01
This particular attraction is privately owned and managed. An expensive vacation stop. Most kids won't appreciate the history of the crater, and some will find the museum very boring.

I have been there with kids and adults and always had a wonderful time. Going there again in a couple of weeks.
$30 really I can't believe that would be a concern? The crater is an example of something rare on earth, we can look up and see the moon covered with craters and our earth used to look the same. I love that you can drive there and not see a house or building... just nowhere, how often do our kids see that, it's such an appreciation that there isn't a Best Western right there. Geez, every employee has to drive there, all the gifts in the gift shop and food in the concession stand is trucked in, and they do such a nice job.... It's a hole made by a meteor from far away, a long time ago, my kids wrapped their little minds around that and still refer to it when space or planets come up! Every kid should have the opportunity to visit here!

We live in AZ -- nowhere near Meteor Crater. After maybe six long-drive visits to the Grand Canyon, I perduaded my family to go to Meteor Crater.

It certainly is a unique astronomical site and very impressive. Any website photo will not do it justice.

I would not go back there with visiting friends as it is a ridiculous drive and certainly not as enjoyable as the GC.

I am sorry the prices are so high and that it is not a (cheaper) National Park site. Blame Teddy Roosevelt perhaps?

Entrance fee is now #15.00 and it is not pet friendly. We decided it was a little steep and pulled off the road about 1/2 mile from the fenced private property of the site. It appeared we were on the road right-of-way where another dirt road intersected, because the no trespassing, and no overnight camping signs were a good 30 yards out in the desert.

I launched my powered paraglider and flew near the crater at an altitude that allowed me to see the bottom and take photos. I did not cross their property line of overfly the crater. Withing minutes a truck with a bevy of blue lights came roaring down from the visitors center and informed my companion that we were parked on private land. He was very rude and tried to intimidate my companion, so I landed and we packed up and headed to the Painted Desert.

With so many great sites in Arizona, I recommend you skip this one, unless you have time and money to burn. They seem a bit greedy, and you can get great pictures and info on the internet.

This is one of your few (relatively) weak reviews, i only gave it helpful because i thought there was not enough detail about how bad the attraction was, and how it was such a bad tourist trap. Well that's what i thought
