"Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away.."

The Bottom Line "A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both." -Dwight D. Eisenhower, Inaugural Address, January 20, 1953

As I was sitting at home last night, waiting anxiously for a call I knew subconsciously was not coming, my Winamp playlist switched to that song. "Yesterday" by the Beatles for you uncouth heathens that didn't recognize it right away. ;)

Allow me to explain where I'm coming from in this. My aunt and 4 cousins, ages 4 to 14 were injured in the World Trade Center tragedy in New York. My godmother, is still among the missing or unreported. A wonderful woman, her name is Valerie and she is my mom's best friend. She has a husband, and a two year old child. She has family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, all who feel her void in our lives as deeply as the next. She worked for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter on the 73rd floor of 2 World Trade Center, in New York. She is missing, and she is missed.

Without further ado, here's what I'm doing, and what's going on around me and with the people I love, all trying to do their parts.

1. Donate blood. If you've ever had major surgery, been in an accident, or needed a blood transfusion, think of the faceless person who gave up their blood so that you might have it. Maybe it's them on the other end who needs your help, and your donation now. I hate to give blood more than anything in the world. I'm not a big fan of needles, but I've already given some, and next week I'll donate again if they say it's safe. I pass out every time, and every time I come back for more. I don't like to give blood, but I'm sure they wouldn't like to die either. Think of it that way, and your sacrafice seems small.

2.Donate money. There are many many disaster relief funds set up for this tragedy, as well as a general donation to the American Red Cross. There is a paypal account setup to take quick donations, you can send a check, whatever. Donate what you can, whether it be $50, $5, or $0.50 at your local grocery store. Every penny helps.

Ways to donate money without breaking your bank!

What are you reading right now? An epinion. What does an epinion earn? A not-so-stellar chunk of change, but hey. Writeoffs, itpaystolearn.com, epinions, and other sites. You can donate some of your earnings from here to those in need. For example, I'm going to be writing for the next week or so, many epinions dedicated to my godmother, Val. Every penny that's earned there, I'm sending to the Red Cross Fund along with some money of my own. I've got friends that are willing to match whatever I make doing this and send it in.

Recycle! - Here's another good way to earn a small bit of money to donate. Recycle! Cans, newspapers, plastic bottles, glass bottles! You name it! My company is currently doing this for the next month and donating the proceeds to the American Red Cross. We generally use the money to stock various candy jars around the office, but this is a small sacrafice that will definitely add up knowing all the caffeine junkies around here.

3. Pray. I'm not religious. I can say that right off. I don't fall under any particular religion, but I believe in something greater than myself. If you're not religious at all, just hope. Add your wishes for the safety or speedy recovery of someone you know, or someone you don't, to all the ones who are praying and hoping as well. What do you have to lose besides a few minutes of your time?

4.Stand together. Don't become infested with hatred and become singleminded in your quest for revenge. This act will be avenged, at the appropriate time and place. Do not further desecrate the American way and the memory of all those who lost their lives, by hating those around you because they look foreign. The world is a large and vast place. America is a beacon of freedom and a symbol of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Do not deny that to others in order to feel better yourself.

All in all..

A great man once said, "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." (John F. Kennedy) So now, do not focus your eyes on the horrors that we have seen, or have yet to see, but look to the now, and to the positive. Try to help those around you locally and think and act nationally. Your help is needed.
