Freecycle is a way to get rid of things that you no longer want or need, and maybe get something that you do need and keep things out of the landfill. To use this service, go to the main Freecycle website and then look for your city or a city nearby. ...

Yeah, I realized that the other day. Thanks for the suggestions on new places to host my photo. I'd been wondering where I was going to put the photo.

Oh, our local beggars do offers, too. You'll see member X offer up a couple of baby bibs and a sippy cup, then notify everyone that s/he is in dire need of a widescreen television and a color printer. Chuckle. SO far today, the WANTS include a Cingular cell phone, a treadmill (a MOD is asking for that!), Hello Kitty merchandise, and sewing fabric. The one OFFER consists of thirteen laying hens and a rooster - which is much more generous than the usual old dishes and baby clothes.

So far I've been lucky with pickups, but they've been large items (a rather decrepit patio set and a basketball goal) and the people showed up as arranged. No idea what happens when the item is small and of relatively low value, though.

Oh, yeah, FYI tripod.com doesn't host images any more, so your profile photo is now just a tripod logo. If you're planning on returning and sticking around, you can have photos hosted at shutterfly, imageshack, photobug, and several other sites.

Cheers,

I agree about the begging. Our local mods are pretty good about reminding people not to post a want without posting an offer as well. I wrote this while waiting for someone to pick up some Boy Scout shorts that my boys didn't need anymore. They both are older and had outgrown them long ago. The lady I was waiting for was going to pick them up Wednesday night, then rescheduled for yesterday and never did show up, call, or email me. Thus the sound of frustration in my essay. Am waiting on the second person to pick them up today.

Freecycle can be great... (Reply to this comment)

but it's up to the local mods to keep it from devolving into a beg board. Our local freecycle runs about 5:4 of people ASKING for things instead of offering them - and they're asking for appliances, expensive exercise equipment, furniture, cars, computers, PDAs, and even game consoles. One poster even asked for a satellite dish once...

Hope yours is better!
