About to go induction - hood question (Reply to this comment)
by rhbgames
Thanks for the great review - we have purchased the cooktop and was wondering how much clearance is required between the cooktop and the hood. Any idea how we can determine that? Thanks so much!

Induction fantastic since 1993 but... (Reply to this comment)

I have had a GE Induction cooktop since 1993. It is a wonderful way to cook. Unfortunately, I have had to replace 2 burner modules over the years (one at three years and one at 6years) (evidently a common problem on these cooktops according to the repair people). The last time the modules were even available they cost over $700 each! Since the cooktop has been discontinued it is impossible to get replacement parts and yes, you guessed it, I just lost another burner! I so enjoyed my induction cooking that I will be replacing the cooktop with another induction cooktop. However, I think that purchasers should be aware that even with a warranty if the parts are not available you are stuck. Of course if we could convince everyone how great they are(and reliability has been improved) maybe this time the cooktop will not be discontinued. Based on my past experiance I would not buy this cooktop without an extended warranty. My guess is that replacement modules are still expensive and not enough time has passed to judge this models reliability. Again let me state I think induction is better than anything I have ever cooked on.

I want one of these so bad. I was intrigued when I saw the commercial. I already have an electric cooktop but they never work as good as gas and I didn't want to spend the money on trying to hook up a gas line there so I am definitely going to look into this.
Great review.
