The Bottom Line There are so many things you can do locally to help those in need. Read more to find out what you can do from afar.

September 11, 2001. Did you ever believe you would see something like this happen to our great nation? Could you imagine someone hating America so much that they would do whatever they could to destroy it? I was at work when CNN broke in and said an airplane had hit the WTC. The silence was deafening as they reported a second plane, and then a third and fourth plane. Total strangers to each other in our waiting room screamed and cried, holding on to each other. Those who were working, crying while helping the patients. What was to happen now?

After the initial shock wore off, news reporters started explaining what one could do to help the victims and rescue workers from afar. There are many things you can do that do not cost you anything, and that help everyone that can be involved:

Give Blood

Organize a blood drive. Give blood, if you are medically able (I am not, unfortunately, since I have seizures). You can call your local Red Cross organization or a local blood bank to find out dates, times and locations, and if they haven't set one up, organize one through them. Many, many people will show for a blood drive, and blood will always be needed--especially now.

Donate Clothing

How many of us have clothes that we haven't worn in ages, or that do not fit us any more? Donate them to the hard workers in New York City that have lost so much. Any clothing will be appreciated, especially for elderly folk and children. You can do this through the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, and other local charities. If you aren't sure, go through your phone book and call the numbers under Charity Organizations; tell them you wish to donate to the survivors and rescue workers in NYC. If they do not donate to who you specify, suggest that they start doing so and give them some ideas. We need to get everyone involved!

Donate Diapers and Baby Accessories

So many children have unfortunately lost their families in this tragedy, that most of them need essential items such as diapes, baby food, clothes, wipes, and formula. Contact your local WIC office to find out where you can send these items to, or contact the Salvation Army and Red Cross for more information. One package of diapers and wipes can make all the difference for an infant.

Donate Money

Yes, a lot of us are not able to just write a check for $50 to donate, but we can organize fund raisers, host write-off's (see my profile page), and hold garage sales to raise money to donate to the NYC charity of your choice. Where I work is holding fund raisers for each department, and Administration is going to match and double what we make from the sales. Proceeds are going to NYC rescue workers, but we aren't sure which one yet. Garage sales take time but you can put a sign up that says "Proceeds going to ... " and you can bet that you will get people wanting to donate more than they normally would.

These are just a few ideas that you can do locally to help aid those in need. Here are some phone numbers for you, and when you call, you can get additional information as well. Thank you for reading, and keep your head high: America Will Prevail!!
