I must be very lucky. That's all I can assume when I hear about other people having problems with Sprint Customer Service, because as a Sprint customer since July of 2004, I have yet to have a single problem with their customer service. In the past, I have used Cellular One, and they had problem after problem with me, charging for phantom phone calls, minutes that should have been free, and many other hassles that often led to a more expensive phone bill. I knew I didn't want to go back to them, and I even considered not having a cell phone until one of my friends suggested I take advantage of one of the new deals being offered by Sprint in our area. After a few weeks of trying to convince me, his truck magically stopped at the store, and we went in to take a look at what they were offering.
A specific deal that they were offering, was $50.00 a month for unlimited minutes, and a phone at no extra charge. That sounded like a pretty good deal for me, and since I work for a State University, I was going to get a 15% discount for signing up. In addition to that, they offered insurance at $5.00 per month, and unlimited long-distance at just $5.00 more per month. I decided to opt in for both of them, and figured that this was a pretty good plan to be getting unlimited minutes, unlimited long-distance, a phone, and insurance for such a good price. The requirement was to sign a 2-year contract with Sprint at the main store, and a requirement to pay the first months bill up front. The activation fee was waved, and phone in hand I was ready to go that day. In addition to what I was given, they also gave my phone 2 months of free Internet, and $10 per month of free downloads from Sprint Services.
Right away, I signed up to have the automatic withdrawal from my checking account each time the bill was due. This was to make it easier on me, and just in case I forgot that a bill was due, it would be paid anyways. I have forgotten about them a couple of times, only to look at my checking account records and see that "oh yeah, it was time to pay again." In that regards the online payment method has probably saved me a few late fees, but not only that, it has worked perfectly for me each time. I have never been overcharged, and I have never had money taken out that I didn't owe. This could be because they were doing a great job, or because I was watching the chargers so closely the first couple of months. I was doing that because of my bad experiences with other companies, and I just wanted to make sure everything was working right with Sprint.
When the internet was ready to expire on my free two months, I had to make a phone call to make sure that it was stopped. They didn't shut it down automatically and would have charged me for it if I didn't make the call. That could be annoying to some people, but I figured that they were giving it to me free for 2 months, so I could just as easily pick up the phone and make a 2 minute phone call. The third month a charge appeared on my statement for Yahoo! Messenger which I could no longer use because I didn't have any Internet. I was worried that I must have signed up for a yearly account or something by accident and that I would now be paying for something I would never use. Upon calling customer service (offices based in Kansas City) they took me at my word that I wasn't using the Internet, and refunded the single charge for the Yahoo! Messenger. It made me quite happy that this was taken care of with no problems, and it showed up right away on my next online statement as a credit to my account.
Besides the extra charge for the Messenger, I have never had any charges to my account that were not expected. The plan that I signed up for meant that I could call anyone in the United States as long as I was in my area. That area is roughly Eastern Washington and Western Idaho, and as long as I am calling from around here, I am not charged any additional fees. However, if I go to like Seattle, or Oregon, then I am charged at a rate of 10 cents per minute. They made this clear to me when I signed up, so when I travel I keep my use to a minimum, knowing that I can always use the phone if I pay a little extra. Using the phone in Eastern Washington I have never had a roaming charge show up, and no extra fees have ever been put on me for using the phone. In that regards it has worked perfectly, and I am very happy with the service I have received.
Every time that I have called customer service with questions about my plans, where I can use my phone, what a specific charge on the statement meant, or about changing my plan around, I have come away happy with the results. The customer service people are always willing to help me out, and always seem to be in a good mood. This is a big change for me, because my last company's people always sounded annoyed that I would even dare calling them with a problem. With Sprint in Eastern Washington, I have had a very good experience dealing with them every time. Regarding editing my plan at all, at any time, I can get rid of the insurance or long distance for no extra charge. I can also add Internet, add picture taking capabilities with a new phone, or download more programs if I don't mind paying a small fee. This is an asset to me, because it means I am not forced to do anything specific with my plan. My 2 year contract with Sprint is almost up, but at this point I would love to renew my contract, and keep all the charges exactly the same if possible. Sprint has been great to me as a customer, and for that they may have created a lifetime user of their services here.
