I'm hungry and I'm going make this as simple and short as possible. Well, that's how long the movie lasted anyway.
The story summarizes with Cloud trying to forgive his sins for allowing Zack and Aeris to die. For those who don't know who they are, Zack was his best friend before Sephiroth became a "murderer." He was a first class Soldier, whereas Cloud is not. In addition, he had everything in his life that Cloud does not have:a home, a best friend, powerful skills as a warrior, an apprentice to Sephiroth a heralded hero, etc. When Zack died for Cloud--and according to the game--then 'stole' his memories from Zack's life, no doubt that Cloud would feel guilty for what he had done.
Then there's Aeris, the girl who died for the sake of saving the Planet. Long story short, she intentionally got herself killed by Sephiroth in order to summon the Lifestream to battle the ultimate Materia "Meteor".
Okay with that said, it had been 2 years since that big battle. While Cloud is searching for redemtion, there are children in the suburbs suffering from an illness called Geostigma. I'm not really understanding what that illness really is but quoting the movie, it is a reaction from the body to rid of bad substances within. Jenovah's cells, perhaps? Either way, despite the title "Advent Children", these children do not play a big part of the plot unfortunately.
And so Cloud and his buddies got together and try to stop Kajah and his gang from the Reunion, in which Kajah meets with Mother (aka Jenovah).
Storywise, it stunk. I loved the game because there was twists and turns and unexpectations. Here, nothing makes any sense. I guess I can blame that on the action because it happen too fast, and then ended too fast. In between, the characters try to catch up with where they left off in their dialogue, which makes less sense because you are still left confused about why the heck is Cloud being attacked. So overall, if there was any depth to this plot besides those creepy children and Cloud's mental problem, I truly see and hear none.
Battles are a big disappointment. Imagine the Matrix, now imagine every character doing a lot of those 'stop and go' movements. I'm sick of it. How long has Matrix had been out? How many movies right after had followed its path? And now FF7:AC too? They do that so many times you just want to turn off the console and forget about it. Also, when did Cloud learned how to fly? Heck, how did everyone learned how to fly? For one scene as an example, he was fighting these two kids--I don't remember the movie had ever mentioned their names--in the tunnel. Suddenly, Cloud can fly and they attack each other in mid-air for longer than 5 seconds. In another example, when Cloud was confronting Bahamut, he was given a lift from his friends in mid-air. What is this, Cirque de Acrobat?
If you are a die-hard fan--like I am--, unfortunately you will be disappointed except seeing your favorite character once in a while. I loved Vincent, but he only appeared twice and said a paragraph of lines. And as another reviewer had said about Red VIII, he too had one line during the entire movie. Cloud is fun but he just bores the heck out of me in this sequel. He had no depth in character except yearning for dead Aeris like a wimp. Tifa looks cool, but for the fans, do not expect her love to Cloud be revealed. It seemed like it was forgotten by the director.
If you had bought the DVD version (not PSP), the case comes with another CD where there is 2-D animations portraying Sephiroth's awakening to insanity. It looks GOOD, and although lasted shorter, it was better than the CGI action and plot from the 3-D version. And from what I had seen, the director could have just skipped the animated Matrix and done the 2-D instead. That would save time, money, and lots of heartbreaks from the fans.
