The Bottom Line Choosing a sound system is a per-person preference. My suggestion... go where you have the most options!

This category has several topics that roll together. I'm not here to tell you which is the best sound system... each person will have to determine that, fitting their own tastes and budget...

What I can tell you is: Don't opt for a dealership upgrade!

One of the big ways the dealer will pad their profit while picking your pocket is by selling you add-on's or after-market products. One of the biggest sales is sound systems.

Most cars today come from the factory with at least and AM/FM Cassette... maybe not the top-of-the-line, but something that will keep you from driving in silence... For a bit more, you can opt for a CD instead of a Cassette. Usually the quality of these sound systems is ok... not great, but ok...

To the die-hard music lover, ok will not cut it. For you, the dealer might have several other choices... Graphic Equalizers, Upgraded Speaker Packages, a CD/Cassette combination unit; maybe even a CD Changer to install in your trunk.

Sounds great, doesn't it? You pick your car up from the dealership... all ready to go Rockin' Down the Highway!

Problem is... these are not always the best units available for the money... and the installer is not, quite often, fully competent in sound system installation!

There are probably a dozen or more businesses in your town that specialize in automotive sound systems. They have technicians who are dedicated to automotive sound systems, not installing a spoiler on one car and changing the oil on the next...

Sure, the people at this business are going to make a profit on you... so was the dealership, plus they were keeping your original radio! Most stereo-stores will give you your original radio back and then, at no extra charge, replace the original when the time comes to trade the car in! The dealership probably doesn't offer that!

Plus, you will find a greater selection to choose from at a business that focuses on selling sound systems, not one that focuses on selling cars...

The only time I'd suggest doing the sound-upgrade is if you are strapped cash-wise and need to make sure the new system is added to the price of the car you are financing... and if your credit is edgy or you have little cash down, this might push the financing out of your range anyway... Otherwise, unless you drive an incredibly hard bargain to get your sound upgrade for free... take the stereo the car came with, and drive down the block to your local sound-system store. You and your ears will be glad you did!
