| markeweber's Full Review: In-Sink-Erator 555ss Garbage Disposal |
Our "old" 1/2 HP GE disposers rusted out after 8 years. We had one for each half of our double sink, something I would heartily recommend for its convenience. These disposers did not have a stainless steel grinding chamber or stainless steel chopping blades. They were loud too. But what did I know when I bought them. I thought a disposer was a disposer, so I told the builder, "Yeah, those are good." This time I did some research, thanks to the now-pervasive Internet. The In-Sink-Erator 555ss looked like a winner: Stainless steel where it counted, a 5-year in-home warranty, reasonable price, many sources to purchase from, and they seemed to fit into the existing plumbing without modification. The hard part of the installation was removing the old disposers because of corrosion and scum that built up around the screw collars of both the sink flange and the u-traps. I had to use a hammer on the pipe wrench, hoping not to break anything. Finally the collars started to turn. The rest was easy. Nothing to cut, everything slipped in easily. The feature I like the best - they don't mangle your eating utensils if you fail to notice one had fallen into the grinding chamber. You will hear a tingling noise but not that dreaded crunch-crunch. They come out perfectly usable. Not to say that you shouldn't check first, and it's easy to check, the chamber is very visible looking down into it. And if you like showing off your kitchen, they are handsome units too. The only negative thing I can say about them is that you need to run them as soon as you put food down them, as they will clog and back up water into the sink.
