| QuickGold's Full Review: Half-Life For Windows, Mac |
Half-Life is a great RPG and breathed new life into the dieing first-person shooter genre. However, it lacked key features such as multiplayer capability. Along comes a few dedicated individuals who make a MOD(modification) of the game and bring what can only be described as the best game-on-top-of-a-game known to man.
Counter-Strike pits you and your teamates(who are all from all over the world via the Internet) against another team. The idea behind it is terrorists versus counter-terrorists. Pick a side, pick your ammo and pick your target because this fast paced game leaves little behind.
The gameplay is remarkebly smooth and easy. Everything has a GUI(graphics user interface) and the learning curve can be overcome in a matter of minutes. What seperates this game from other team based games(i.e. Unreal Tournament) is in this game your team must work as a team or you will not win. It allows for novices to follow veterans into combat and learn from each other. The various real world weapons are great and fun to use. Each team has its own set of weapons and you can pick up ones as people die.
Want more? Counter-Strike is a FREE(!) download. You can buy it in a CD from the store, but if you want to, you can download it for free and play a game that could easily retail for $30 or more. Of all the MOD's of Half-Life available, Counter-Strike blows them all away.
The sound is great as well. If you've got any sort of surround sound hookup for your computer, you'll really see the difference as you'll hear bullets being fired behind you in the distance and footsteps coming towards you from around that corner.
Graphics are just amazing. Unlike Unreal Tournament which as futuristic looking, not likely to ever exist weapons, everything in here is beautifully textured and could easily pass for the real thing. My advice is get a good video card so you can really take advantage.
The only problem is connection speeds. Unlike previous net games, you really do need some sort of broadband connection to enjoy the game. If you try to use dial-up with this, you'll find high lag times and very lagged games and it REALLY makes it a bad experience. Counter-Strike also has the ability to utilize LAN's if you've got one.
For all of you who are wondering what would be ideal, here is what you should have to really appreciate and enjoy this game:
*Good Soundcard with at least 2 satellites and subwoofer
*Decent 3D Card
*Broadband internet connection(i.e. DSL, Cable, etc.)
*Lots of caffeine to keep you awake
The bottom line is this game is great, free and worth whatever you have to do to get it. Buy Half-Life, download Counter-Strike and your set. The addiction of this game is quite high and be prepared to waste lots of time playing this game.
