What are they trying to do?
Written: May 07 '01
Pros:Sleeker look make it look like they're really trying.
Cons:Lousy interface, My Sidebar, preset bookmarks, crashes.
The Bottom Line: Wait a few months until they work a few bugs out and create/expand the FAQ for version 6. Personally, I'll be using my good ol' Communicator 4.7.
One day, my old Netscape crashed 4 or 5 times. After kicking my computer repeatedly, I decided that maybe Netscape was the problem. So I thought, "Maybe Netscape has a new, crash free version!" So I downloaded version 6 (I have 4.7, by the way) and hated it.
First of all, I don't like the new, sleek look. They buttons are different in that they don't actually push down. Minor point, but I use the internet everyday and I don't want to get used to this. The new My Sidebar feature seems like it would be helpful to some, but I would personally never use it. It is similar to the History/Favorites/etc. sidebar in Microsoft IE. The next thing I realized was that the personal toolbar has links to "My Netscape" and "Net2Phone" that are un-removable. I tried searching through help (both in the program and on netscape.com) to find out how to remove them to no avail. There are a few other menus with pre-installed links, too (one over the address line, the other on the bottom of the browser). I couldn't get rid of these either.
Add to all this the fact that in the 20 minutes I had the program, it crashed 4 times (one time while stopping while a page was loading, another time after tooling around with the My Sidebar feature). Once the program crashed, it wouldn't start up again and I was forced to reboot my computer (and more kicking).
The new Netscape is littered with advertisements. Under the file menu, printer vendors are listed. Prevalent throughout the pre-installed links are shopping sites. And under one menu, Net2Phone shows up again with its own link in the middle of nowhere.
Finally, this program comes with Free AOL software. Honestly, I think that's enough for most people to avoid it.
