Most is excellent tasting food; All appears to be terrific quality

Ask me three years ago if I’d buy prepared frozen food from a home delivery service and I would have said ‘no!!!’ Then one day my kids came home from school with a mini-catalog from Schwan’s as a PTA fund raising project. With all the Entertainment Books, Sally Foster Wrapping Paper, Cub Scout’s Trail’s End popcorn to sell I just couldn’t start spending money on frozen food from some company I’d never heard of.
Then someone at work sent out an email asking if anyone had heard of Schwan’s. The replies came flooding in about how good the food was.
Fast Forward to a couple of months ago. We’re now living back in Richmond, Virginia. A Schwan’s truck pulls up in front of the house and the guy comes to the door with a catalog to see if we’d be interested in trying any of the foods. We’re now hooked!!
Exactly What IS Schwan’s?
It’s a frozen-food home delivery service that has been in business for over 50 years. You can order a variety of mostly pre-cooked Appetizers, main dishes (meats, poultry, seafood, ribs), side dishes and desserts.
Does Schwan’s Deliver to your area?
First things first! Does Schwan’s service your area? Find out by going to their web site: www.schwans.com. On the home page you will find a place to enter your zip code. If service is available in your area the home page will inform you. You can then open an account by following the instructions. Our driver comes to the door every two weeks.
So many choices of food on the web site!
It IS possible that some of the items you find are either not available or out of stock. That is because some of the items may not be available in your geographic area or some may be out of stock. But Schwan’s customer service told me that even if something is out of stock there may still be some quantity available on your driver’s truck that he hasn’t sold out of, yet. I was told that you should ask your driver so he can be sure the local depot orders the product. The driver said Schwan's keeps very tight control over sales of products. If after a period of time they have less than a certain percentage of sales of a product that they will discontinue it.
Do I order from the Web Site?
Yes, It is a good idea, because the driver does not necessarily carry ALL items. By ordering up to 48 hours ahead of time he will make sure he loads that item on the truck for you (if it’s in stock at the local depot). If something you want is not available, you will be informed when you enter the item item to order.
Do I prepay on the web site? No! You pay when the the driver delivers the food! The driver will accept checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover/Novis, and, oh yeah, even cash! They have also started adding a $1.00 fuel service charge per order because the higher fuel costs. But I've seen this even from UPS so I'm not upset over it.
OK, krus! What have you ordered and is it any good?
I’ll list some of the stuff we have liked and some we haven’t.
Chicken Fries OMG! The kids ask for these several times a week!!! These are chicken nuggets shaped in long french fry shapes. I have had to start buying two bags each time the driver shows up! These come in 2.5 lb bags and can be baked, deep fried, or microwaved. We bake them. I can’t imagine microwaving these. They'd be WAY too soggy! The kids like them slightly crunchy. A bag costs about $14.00. Expensive? yes! Worth it? Absolutely!!!!
Breaded Chicken Breast Patties Another of our kid’s favorite!! These come in 18 patties for $16.00. These are more expensive than Tyson’s brand at Costco, but the kids seem to like these better than Tyson’s.
Turkey, Chicken and Sirloin Beef Pot Pies These come 4 single-serving containers in a box. The beef one is $11.00 and the others are $10.00. You can cook these in the oven for about an hour or use the microwave and they cook in about 5 minutes. Believe it or not, the box these comes in actually browns and crisps the top of the pot pies in the microwave. These are also delicious. I did notice the chicken pot pies didn’t seem to have as much chicken as I would have liked. The turkey pot pies had a good amount of turkey and same with the steak. I didn’t care for the taste of the steak pot pies as much as the others.
Southern Style Biscuits Yikes! The driver told us these are one of his most popular items. I can understand why!! We are going nuts over these. A bag of 18 biscuits costs $6.00 which I think is also high, but these are so flaky and delicious! You can’t eat just one and they’d be great with some Smithfield ham (don’t tell my kids I said that! We don’t eat pork in the house!).
Chip and Mint Sundae Cones These are SOOOO good! This is a chocolate sugar cone filled with mint ice cream swirled with fudge and topped with chocolate and chocolate chips! 12 come in a box for $10.00. I have one complaint about these…actually 2… The first is that the cone itself is not crisp, but that might be hard to do with it being frozen. The second complaint is that I have a difficult time eating only 1 of them at a time!
krus…this review is getting too long… tell us what else have you had, but without all the detail?
- The kids keep asking me to re-order the Chocolate Chip cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches. Excellent, but only 6 in a box for $9.00.
- We have ordered some of the chicken wings but were not crazy about them. The boneless Oriental Style Teriyaki wings were awful!
- And while we liked the meatloaf patties we got, they were more like thick oval shaped hamburgers.
- You’ll have to look around on the web site for everything they offer. Email me if you want more info on specifics of what we’ve ordered.
Our driver comes to the house every two weeks and each week the kids beg us to order stuff. The food is expensive but we feel much of it is absolutely worth the extra cost!
A recent review prompted me to update this very old review. I have read several newer reviews which have complained about customer service. I do have to agree. I have called multiple times over the years and noticed that the customer service people just don't seem to care. And then, neither to the managers when I've tried to escalate over the no-service customer service reps.
I should also mention the web site navigation is pretty good. You can search for your favorite items or go through by types of food i.e., meats, vegetables, desserts, etc. The site keeps your order history so you can order from past items you've purchased. Descriptions of items also include nutritional information.
