I don't know what to say except to say everyone here is thinking of you

The Bottom Line From your UK allies and friends

Here is the view from over the pond. The whole of Britain is just utterly in distress and can think of nothing else. Nothing could ever break the special relationship between the UK and the US just as nothing can break the American spirit. People here know they owe their very freedom to untold thousands of American servicemen when Nazi Germany was at our door. They wish there were a way to honour this in kind but we feel so cut off and helpless at this time.

What can you do? Heaven help me for I don't know. Americans don't need advice from Brits on how to conduct themselves. There was never a more admired bunch of people for your energy, spirit, will and determination. You will make it through for sure. In Britain we are now coping by taking the unprecedented step of talking to each other. But this is nothing new for you and your self-help connections and ability to support each other are there for all to see and make me proud to be an epinionator however occasional.

What can we do for you? Ask us and we'll do it. Don't doubt the strength of feeling for you in the UK. We are mute and speechless and keen for anything to soften the agony. I read today that a professional soccer player decided to donate all his win bonuses to the WTC families. Others followed suit. The Queen ordered your national anthem played in place of hers at the ceremonial guard. My goodness, how magnificent it sounded to all who witnessed it. Then we cancelled a golf match, wondering why we ever got so heated up about it in the first place. But the truth is, we just don't know where to put ourselves. If you can think of anything please ask.

Who amongst us - wherever we are - never rode to the top, or saw them from a connecting flight, or knew someone who worked for some company also in the WTC, and scrambled to check they were okay? None amongst you and none over here either. Your tragedy is a tragedy for all the world, touching everyone in some way.

There is no doubt that the real victory is Americans will never succumb to being steered by their enemies into a religious hate war, however gross the provocation, and I am speechless with admiration at the sentiments on these pages. In Europe, and especially in my part of town, we live and work as you do with all manner of people and cultures; I have friends and colleagues, many of them followers of many different religions, all civilised, proud but tolerant, aghast with horror as everyone else is - I cannot recall anything ever that so united people's resolve to pursue what is right and stamp out this badness.

I just wanted you to know that people in Britain are at your side for as long as this takes. Our hearts are your hearts.
