Microsoft Windows XP: Finally a "Rock Solid" Operating System from Microsoft
by Gr8ful | Sep 20 '01
This operating system is literally "Rock Solid" and for once I am actually impressed with an operating system from Microsoft.

I like how you've stress tested Windows XP and find your writing to be very descriptive and to the point. Thank you for posting this. I've given you a Very Helpful rating, and I would gladly give you a Most Helpful grade except that I haven't read all of the WinXP epinions here!

Thanks again and great job!

Multi-processor support. Both Home/Pro support dual monitors.

Since January I have been dual-booting Me/XP home of course it was called whistler then.
And until recently was using Windows XP Home as a dual-boot with Windows Me. I now am using XP Pro. By the way when I installed XP Home I completely erased all booting files and XP Beta from my computer. Even deleting the dual booting menu.

Roxio Easy CD Creator (Reply to this comment)
by firstcontact21
I bought that on Monday, because I skimmed the website and thought it would be fine - the Platinum Easy CD Creator 5.0. It said 3.0, which came with my Yamaha CDRW drive wouldn't work at all... and I know it didn't in the trial version so I didn't even bother installing it when I bought XP Pro last week. But I misread the site and went out and bought it cause I was under the assumption an updated driver was already available. So I go home and go to download the update before installing it and I noticed that it's "coming soon." So I installed it anyway, and I found the Easy CD Creator works fine, I was able to pull MP3 tracks off my computer and create CDs with them (and finally, at the fastest speed my drive will burn at - 16x! Windows 98 never liked burning at 16, it would always give me an underrun. Sometimes, if I did nothing else I could go at 12x, usually I could only get away with 8x while doing other things... but I've burned about a dozen CDs this week at 16x at around 4mins per CD - all while doing other things - wordprocessing, fiddling on the Internet, chatting, etc. - so it's very nice). And Direct CD, CD Copier have worked as well. I haven't used some of the other features of the program yet, apparently Take Two will not work at all as it was DOS based anyway - but it doesn't sound like a part of the program I'd ever use anyway. And, luckily, the update did come from Roxio on Thursday - so you can now download patches for XP to make it all work :)

On another note, I'm disappointed with Creative Systems, the only company to NOT come out with udpated drivers and software for it's products. I've been in a message board flame war with their help department who have turned out to be disappointingly unhelpful, and basically HP, Epson, ATI and other big companies have all come out with XP updates, but Creative has not. Specifically, I'm having troubles with the Creative software for the PC-DVD Encore with DXr3 Decoder board. It's very annoying because, even though it didn't work at all under the trial edition, now it does work but when I go to close the Creative DVD Player program, XP reboots!

not fun.

And I'm getting the run around the block from creative. Luckily, I've been planning on picking up the fairly new Radeon All-In-Wonder card, to replace my older Creative PCI Savage 4 card - but still, you'd think Creative would have been more on the ball on this one. Usually they are and I've had no problems with their products in the past. All of their stuff did work fine under Windows 98, but their is no way I'm setting up a dual boot just to watch a frickin' DVD... luckily the software for the All-In-Wonder is supposedly fine under XP, XP Plus! even lists the ATI Radeon as a recommended video card for it's programs.

I think Creative spent too much time working on the new Audigy that they forgot about servicing older products -- a mistake, cause if I still have problems with this, I have no qualms about using my free, 3 year, no hasstle exchange warrenty to just return it. I told them that, at the very least I'd love to know when they'll have something out their... they've posted dates for some product updates, but not all. If they even did that I'd be fine!

If only they listened more!

Anyway, enough ranting - other than that problem, everything else is great :) I love XP!

This is a really great review in the way that you explained what XP is, and what it has to offer over the current operating systems. Well done!
