I bought this computer for school. I'm an architecture major, so having a reliable computer that could support graphics programs was a must. It also needed to be able to travel with me to and from classes, as well as going from home in Hawaii to college in California.
On the surface, this seems like a good computer, especially for the price since it's been a couple years since its release. At first it was fast, nice large screen, fairly lightweight. The colors were a bit distorted from other computers, as well as when I print. The battery life has always been short for me. I've never had it run for more than 1 hour, 45 minutes, even with minimal usage.
Reliability is the catch. At first I liked this computer. 6 months after purchasing it, however, the computer wouldn't read the hard drive. HP replaced the hard drive for me, but occasionally I would get a repeat of the same problem. One nice thing about it is that you can take the hard drive out without opening the case. So I'd take it out, put it back in. It would work fine for a while, then I'd have to repeat.
This thing doesn't take travel very well. Problems would always happen after I took it somewhere. The biggest crashes would be when I would fly back from breaks. In the past 4 months, this thing rarely tolerates moving a short distance without requiring taking out and replacing the hard drive.
The past 4 months have been nothing but a headache. While the hard drive has been the major issue, I did have one problem where it would not even start up. You would hear the noises for a few seconds, then it would die. The hard drive read problem has been ridiculous. One time I had to repair it because the problem had happened so many times, my temporary solution had stripped the screws.
Additionally, since the last time I received it back from repairs, the speed has plummeted. It takes forever for things to load.
To sum it up, if you want a computer that will last you more than a few months, this is not the computer for you. My attitude toward it now is not if it's going to fail again, it's when.
