A SURVIVAL Kit

Sep 21 '01

The Bottom Line An extreme survival package should the unthinkable happen.

Now that America is at war, you and your family should be well prepared. Some of the measures that I will mention are going to sound extreme. You might say that it is not necessary. I think you are right. I hope that this will never, ever matter. I will nonetheless tell you not only common first aid materials, but items to have to prepare for war and the absolute worse case scenario. Again, I hope this is a waste of your time.

When we think of first aid kits, we think of gauze, Band-Aids and aspirin. Those things are necessary too, but it is time to add to that. First, if you have a first aid kit already, make sure that any medicines you have in it aren’t expired. Any kind of ointments or pills have expiration dates, and they are not as effective if they are too old.

Make sure you have not just burn ointments, but a burn spray for larger wounds. Make sure this spray has an antiseptic to help prevent infection. Also have medicines for cuts and bandages and / or slings for broken bones.

If you or someone in your family takes any kind of medication, get an extra prescription of each to put in your first aid kit. This is especially important if you or a family member have diabetes, heart or blood pressure problems, or even psychological illnesses such as schizophrenia or severe depression.

Have common cold medicines. What ever you would normally take for a headache, flu and allergies is fine. Also pack other common things like soap, shampoo, towels and blankets. Pack an extra set of clothes for everyone in your family.

Pack a flashlight and a battery operated radio. Pack extra batteries for any battery operated device you have. Even if you don’t smoke, make sure you have matches or a lighter. You may even pack some candles.

Get a fire extinguisher, or make sure the one you have is working properly.

Pack enough food and water to last at least two weeks. Don’t forget utensils like a can opener and a couple of pans. Get a pack of paper plates and eating utensils as well.

If you have a baby, pack extra formula, bottles, diapers and baby food. You may even pack a couple of toys for your child. You may even get a couple of books for yourself.

You may consider having two survival kits. Store one in your home, and one in a safe place outside your home. Put it in a storage shed, at a relatives home, in the trunk of your car - any safe place that you can get to easily.

I’m sorry for what I’m about to say next. It hurts me to say it and I don’t really want to, but I’m afraid it is necessary. This is a decision you should think about. Do what you feel is right for you and your family.

This review was inspired by a story on the news about gas masks. Apparently, they are very popular items right now. Call your local Army / Navy store to check supplies. More so, I recommend the disposable, paper masks that fit around your face. You should also be able to find these at an Army / Navy store. Make sure you have enough for your entire family.

If it was up to me every one in the world would destroy their guns and we wouldn’t need them anymore. However, you have the right to bare arms. I don’t suggest you go out and buy an arsenal, but I do recommend having the necessary defenses to protect you and your family. This is the only situation I support using a gun. But if it comes down to protecting our families from people who think all Americans should die, we should all be prepared to do what is right.

Personally, I would rather be safe than sorry.

God Bless America
