I Was alittle reluctant to get Mudvayne's new album, not being a fan of Screamo. But I had heard a few of the songs of this album, and they were great, so i decided to, and the Dual Disc was cheaper then the regular format, so i decided to get that one. It was a great choice. Mudvayne has decided to put screamo behind them and become a metal band, and just in time too.
Heaviness: 5/5
Lyrics: 4/5
Singing: 3/5
Guitar Work: 3/5
Here's The Track By Track Review:
1.)Determined:
One of the first singles, and also one of the heaviest. This song is just over 2 minutes, but packs a punch that will leave your eardrums ringings. Great heavy opening Guitar riff, and screams used but they are bareable, Still a Catchy Song, This Is Like Rap metal, Sounds Cool.
8/10
2.)Pushing Through:
Another classic Mudvayne opening, they have a signature riff and it's used on this song as well as almost every song. This song is screamed during the verses. Then a Gentle singing for the pre-chorus, then screamed again in the chorus. Now i know i said earlier that they got away from Screamo, which is true. These are screams, but not as heavy as they used to be. Not even close. This song, is a good metal song that will leave you having trouble hearing but you'll probaly find yourself missing it because it is in between the two singles. The next one being the best.
6/10
3.)Happy?:
The Best song on the CD, and also the first single. Rated as one of the best metal songs of 2005, it is as good as they say. With a classic opening riff that will have you knowing its "Happy?" right away. To the great lyrics of the chorus "Does It Make You Happy Now?" Sends Chills down your spine. You probaly wouldn't be reading this review if it wasn't for this song. This is a big enough reason to get the CD alone.
10/10
4.)IMN:
Takes about 45 seconds for the opening riff to kick in with the loud yell of "SUICIDE" this has a similar sound to Determined, So It's a good song, but also probaly the heaviest song on the CD. So easy listeners leave this song be. But If your an easy listener, you shouldn't even be reading a review on Mudvayne.
5/10
5.)Fall Into Sleep:
This song is giving Happy? a good run for the best song on this album. With the creepy singing of the singer on the verses, then the whispers then just the yells "FALL INTO SLEEP, FALL INTO ME, I HAVE A DREAM, BUT NO BODY CARES, NO BODY WANTS TO LISTEN" very catchy, and shouldn't be missed. The 3rd single, if I'm not mistaken, should have been number 2.
10/10
6.)Rain. Sun. Gone
A different guitar riff is a change, but im afraid that's the high point of this song. The singing is neither a creepy whisper, or screams. After hearing Fall Into Sleep, this song just doesn't measure up to The bar I have set for Mudvayne. Still Not a bad song. Simple Yells of "Rain. Sun. GONE!"
7/10
7.) Choices
At clocking in at over 8 minutes long, It's defantely a highlight of the album. With a whiney opening lines Then a Rapping verse with a creepy chanting from children "Ennie Meenie Mo" really adds to this song, giving it a creepy feel. But the best part of the song is at about the 3 minute mark when "Theres No Choice in Freedom, There's No Voice In Freedom" Really a great song. One of Mudvayne's best for sure.
8.5/10
8.) Forget To Remember
The 2nd release after The Happy?/Determined, was also seen on the Saw 2 Soundtrack. This is another radio friendly song that is sung with minimal screams. He Yells One Liner's to bring in the chorus that is really catchy and is underrated by most reviewers, It is a good song. The highlight of this song is in the bridge when he screams to "surrender To the sequence" that part sold me on this song.
9/10
9.) TV Radio
Ok, well so far, Im pretty impressed with my Mudvayne CD, and this song keeps me impressed. It still isnt all that heavy for Mudvayne and has some catchy points In the chorus with screaming then the singing of "Turn Off The Radio, Turn off The TV" With creepy back vocals. Another good point of this CD. Let's hope Mudvayne can keep this up.
8/10
10.) Just
This reminds me of older Mudvayne, which the hard-core fans will be happy to hear. "Just A Few Seconds Away" screams the lead singer. If Your A Fan of heavy/ Classic Mudvayne, check this song out for sure.
7/10
11.) All That You Are
The 2nd longest song on the album at just over 6 minutes long. Takes several seconds for the song to start up, with a gently whisper from the singer, with the music building up slighty getting heavier and heavier. It continues to do this for about a minute and a half. This song is a gentle side of Mudvayne we have yet to see on this album. It's a nice change, and gives your ears time to re-cooperate Before the next song.
7/10
12.) Pulling The String
The song contains a cool guitar rythm steady while one singer sings and another chants after each line "BY MYSELF" which adds a nice effect. Not a noticable chorus here, and i found it to get on my nerves after awhile. It's too bad that Mudvayne didn't choose to use "All That You Are" to close the album, cause that has much more melody and would have closed it nicely. This song is good for metal fans, but not a closer with the final scream to end the album "PULLING THE STRING" then it all goes quiet to silent the "Lost & Found" Expeariance.
6/10
Normally, I find screamo/Heavy Metal to be on the annoying side, But this album has given me faith that Metal is growing and will one day be a regular on the Mainstream radio.
The Dual Disc also has a DVD that the entire album in enhanced Stereo which doesnt really matter to me, but more importantly, there is a few videos and rare photos from the concerts and behind the scene footage. So considering I got this for less then CD that had no DVD i was happy.
The videos are:
Happy?: The making of, shows how they did the features and stunts which is cool, but it would have been better if they would have had the actual video on their as well.
Determined: This shows them recording in the studio and performing live as the song plays in the background, I'm not sure if thats how the actual video Is, but it seems pretty cool and is worth a watch.
IMN: I'm not sure why this is a video as I don't think it is a single. But it is similar to Determined as it is clips from them recording it, and a live performance of it, while the song plays.
So The bonus footage is nice. The CD warns that it may not play in some CD players, but i had no trouble with it in any of my 3 players so I was glad to have picked this one up considering all the bonus stuff, and it being less money, so i strongly suggest you pick this one up instead, 'more bang for your buck' as the saying goes.
