Rip Off - Don't be fooled by beautiful pictures (Reply to this comment)

I agree with calwaone, the ads are amazing, but your not getting a good deal or even good quality jewelry. Everything blue nile offers is generic and at below average quality. The prices are absolutely absurd. Save your money and buy from small businesses that offer better selection, quality and price. My family only buys from www.amalfijewelers.com.
They are a family run business with fantastic prices and great selection. They are very friendly too.

No actual proof of purchasing or inspecting the goods (Reply to this comment)

How can this reviewer comment in such a way when they are only considering 14k Gold purchases and they never actually seemed to buy anything from this store? I am looking for a higher end platinum necklace and this so called jeweler hasn't helped in the slightest.

QVC is far from a baseline (Reply to this comment)
by blauvj
I have seen things selling on QVC for twice what they are worth, they are far from being the price standard. I went shopping at "real" jewelry stores before buying from Blue Nile, and their price were the ones that were horrific! Blue Nile was half the price of the ones I saw in the jewelry store for the SAME RING!

Totally Irrelevant (Reply to this comment)

I was under the impression that the point of this site was to offer feedback based on actual experiences with a merchant or product. Your only expressed experience with Blue Nile appears to be browsing for prices to compare... to QVC? As an alleged jeweler, your only advice is to price shop based on HSN or QVC? Even though you yourself claim to "NEVER buy jewelry from the television 'hypers'"? Wow. The education section posted on the Blue Nile website was far more helpful than advice coming from someone who allegedly works in the jewelry industry.
One of my best friend's finace's purchased her ring from Blue Nile, and they had a great experience with the site, in terms of price, quality, and customer service. (Not just in their opinion, the ring was independently appraised after purchase.)

Boy are you wrong. (Reply to this comment)

I just bought a $16k 3.07 carat emerald cut diamond ring from this place and it is great. I boned-up on diamonds and shopped diligently offline. No one can come close. And I am comparing apples to apples because they supply GIA certificates (GIA and AGS are most reputable, don't use any other).
There is no way you can watch tv and "get a feel" for prices, you have no idea what they are selling and I bet you cannot find a single shopping network with a GIA certificate.

But was it a good jewelery store? (Reply to this comment)
by puddinhead42
You comment seemed total factless. It is not possible to get a 'feel' for diamond prices by watching a shopping channel. If the prices at BlueNile are outrageous, then it must be compared to like jewels, not something you see on tv. A ligit jeweler would point out that you must know the cut, clarity, color and carat of a diamond to START making a comparison. You want to find a jeweler you can trust, one that only sells GIA or AGS certified stones, one that will educate you, one with a good return policy, one that won't just push what he has in stock. BTW, there is really no such thing as wholesale in the diamond business. BlueNile is rate well by a number of independent websites (like this), including Forbes online guide. Print out a couple of GIA certs from the site and see if you can find a local jeweler that can come close (not even including taxes).

Well, that's certainly interesting..... (Reply to this comment)

My boyfriend and I have been shopping around for my engagement ring for months now. Just today, I tried on a ring that I absolutely loved, but was a bit out of his price range. I got the details of the diamond and setting, and I was able to build the exact same ring with a larger, better quality stone, AND the same setting for $300 less. I'm sorry, but if you're shopping for quality over quantity, Blue Nile is the place to go! I may have never owned a jewelry store, but I know my stuff; enough to where jewelers are apprehensive dealing with me (the always ask "do you work in the jewelry business?" before giving me details on a ring).
Bottom line, if you want to buy a poorly cut diamond just to save a few hundred dollars, that's your perrogative. If not, go to Blue Nile.

wow! (Reply to this comment)

I was shocked when I read this review having recently purchased (last week) a loose diamond from Blue Nile. I went to at least 7 area jewelery stores that deals in loose diamonds and checked out at least 20 websites and they couldn't match the variety of stones offered at Blue Nile. When I did find a stone at a local jeweler within my criteria, it was $3500 MORE than the price at Blue Nile!!!!! And watch what happens if you ask a local jeweler to provide a Sarin report. Blue Nile provided Sarin reports on 5 diamonds within 24 hours of my request. I ended up purchasing a 1.19 carat, SI1, H color, AGS Ideal 0 which was laser inscribed at the AGS lab for $5889.00. Blue Nile even sent a GCAL certificate of authenticity.
I think the one reviewer was right...the traditional jeweler really does see the writing on the wall.

Home shopping clubs and local jewelry stores (Reply to this comment)
by travelertoo
I have to say that I recently bought an akoya pearl necklace at one of these "home shopping clubs" and the quality was horrible. It was much smaller than I thought it would be and the color was not very good. It seemed like a good deal at the time, but I ended up returning it. I looked at local jewelry stores and even at Costco, but I found the best quality and the best deal for what I got at Blue Nile. I would buy from them again and again. Great customer service. I am now looking at diamond stud earrings - they have a great price for very good quality (and they have screw backs on the posts that a lot of other stores don't have).

It is interesting that you have a jewelry background and that certainly gives you a different perspective.
But consumers are looking for details about the website, selection, organization, pricing, etc. If you'd like to edit, please email me the review link. thanks.

Do I smell a grudge? (Reply to this comment)
by Sanvean
I found this review to be rather biased -- and to contain incorrect information. I compared the prices at Blue Nile to wholesale prices and found them to be very reasonable.
My fiance bought my diamond -- a gorgeous round solitaire in a platinum setting -- from Blue Nile, and I couldn't be happier with it. He's happy, too, because he spent only a fraction of the price he would have spent at most brick and mortar jewelry stores. My stone came with an AGS certificate as well.
I think perhaps the writer wants to discourage people from buying online because it will eventually replace the B&M jewelry industry -- which, as he points out repeatedly, employs numerous members of his family.
