| jimsue13's Full Review: Eureka Smart 4870DT Bagged Upright Vacuum |
I consider myself a fair-minded person, and in fairness I have to take issue with several reviews that - in my opinion - are nit picking this vacuum to death. I should say that I have the upgraded 4870GZ version.
Yes, some switches, including the lock release and brush roll control switches, could be designed to be easier to use. Yes, it's heavy, blah blah blah. But sweet sassie malassie, if the nit pickers would just stop harping on relatively minor faults - and that's what they are - long enough to actually USE the machine, they would find it does an amazing job of cleaning.
I decided to buy this vacuum because my old vacuum was driving me crazy with its lack of suction, and filthy dirt-cup emptying ritual. (If you've never had a bagless vacuum, take it from me, it's not worth it. You feel like Pig Pen when you're done, with a dust cloud your constant companion. Stick with the bags. It cleans better, and it's a lot easier - and cleaner - to dispose of the dirt.)
I bought this product because of the recommendation from a trusted source, Consumer Reports. The magazine takes no advertising and therefore is beholden to no one. It just renders an honest opinion. It has never let me down, and certainly didn't with its recommendation of this machine. Here are a few of the things that I love about it:
1) It is well-built, solid and aggressive in going after dirt. It's large head and powerful brush dig deep to get dirt way down in the carpet.
2) It is smooth and easy to push. I read some reviews that said it was hard to push, or pull back or something. Bunk! This machine glides across my carpet. When I started it up for the first time I even thought it was self-propelled. It's a pleasure to use.
3) The tools store easily on the machine, and the hose locks on and does not fall off. I don't know what other people are talking about when they say the hose falls off. If you lock it on (very easy to do) it stays in place and never comes off unless you take it off. The one thing I don't like is that the Power Paw that comes with the 4870GZ model that I have does not store on the machine. Oh, and it could break if you are too rough with it. But if you use general care and aren't brutish with it, it works just fine. Again, just minor faults.
4) The machine looks nice. Not a big deal for some people, but I prefer an attractive machine to one that is plain, ungainly or flat unattractive.
5) The high-quality for the low price. I bought this vacuum for $139 on Amazon with free shipping. I can't imagine a vacuum cleaning any better - or having more usable options - at any price.
6) The usable options. The hose is sturdy and very well made. It stretches to five times its length to reach anywhere you need to reach. Then there's the Power Paw, a very handy portable tool with a beater brush that is perfect for stairs and upholstery, etc. Then there's my favorite feature of all, which is the switch to turn off the brush roll. You rarely find this feature on a vacuum costing less than $300. By switching off the brush roll you can divert all the considerable suction of this wonderful machine to the hose. And oh my goodness, is it a beast. Dirt - even larger pieces of gravel or mud you might want to vacuum out of your car - is no match for the power of this unit. It is phenomenally strong, and I love that! Finally, a vacuum that just works!
In summary, no, this machine is not perfect. But in every way that is important to me it is darn close. It's also a phenomenal value for the top-quality construction and cleaning.
Before I go, let me stay this about the switches that are a little hard to push. THEY'RE NOT THAT HARD TO PUSH! Sheesh, some people just exaggerate, that's all I can say. Or they're unbelievably weak. Either that, of they work for a rival vacuum company that is being hurt by sales of this well-made and easy-to-afford cleaning machine.
Bottom line: I love mine and wouldn't give it up for anything.
