Power Bass: Amazingly Good Bass For An Amazingly Good Price!

Sep 23 '01

The Bottom Line POWER BASS... Read on to find out which some of the best subwoofers are... The best bass for the best price.

So you might ask yourself, what does Power Bass refer to? It refers to the JBL Power Bass subwoofers. There are only two available now, a 10" and 12", but they both are awesome. I have been able to find them for some ridicously low prices at Etronics.com. Anyway, here is some backround and everything else you need to know about these subwoofers that will give you premium bass for not such a premium price.

-JBL, Masters Of Bass-
*How did JBL ever gain such a good reputation? They proved themselves worthy by putting out excellent quality products, rather than simply ridiculous advertising like Bose. But anyhow, JBL is considered to be one of the greatest developers of subwoofers out there. If you hear out any JBL subwoofers that have been ceased of production, or the new PB (Power Bass) series subs, you will understand why JBL has such a good reputation.

-The Amplifier... The Next Most Important Thing-
*The part of a subwoofer that is second most important is the amplifier. The amplifier is what powers the driver in the subwoofer. Without an amplifier, you won't be getting any bass. Anyhow, if you look at the total wattage that the amps in these subs produce, you will be pleasantly surprised. For example, I have seen most 12" subwoofers that have amplifiers that are usually less than 150Watts. However, the amplifier on the JBL PB10 10" subwoofer is already 150Watts which is amazingly a lot for only a 10" subwoofer. With that amount of power, you can get heart pounding bass from a 10" driver that will end up sounding like something much bigger. Likewise, the JBL PB12 12" subwoofer has a huge 250Watt amplifier that totally blows the competition away. You should expect monsterous bass from this baby!

-The Drivers, JBL Knows Best-
*The driver is the actual speaker in the subwoofer. JBL uses a 10" driver in the PB10, and a 12" driver in the PB12. JBL uses excellent materials in their speakers. For example, they use Polyplas in their normal speakers. In their subwoofers they use pure cellulose fiber which is a polymer. It has excellent durability and bass reproduction. So as you can see, JBL doesn't use trash materials for their subwoofers. The JBL Power Bass subwoofers can easily handle cross-overs as high as 150Hz! The competition already struggles trying to get to a top cross-over of 120Hz for example. Most people don't want way too much bass, so they set their subs down around 80Hz, but some people like me want all the bass that a subwoofer can possibly handle. This JBL can handle a cross-over of 25Hz all the way up to 150Hz! Talk about driver quality! With these cellulose fiber drivers, you should expect very deep, powerful, and clean bass. This is what JBL subwoofers are all about.

-The Bass Quality-
*I have heard many different subwoofers on the market. Some have awesome, loud, clean bass. Some can't put out bass if their lives depended on it. Some give loud but distorted bass. However, the JBL Power Bass subwoofers will give you very clean, powerful, deep, and loud bass. Plus, you won't have to pay a very premium price if you know where to find them cheap.

*Let's look at the PB10 10" 150Watt subwoofer. I would never really buy 10" subwoofers, because many that I heard can't handle very low frequencies, or at least at heart pounding levels. However, subwoofers from Paradigm, Boston Acoustics, and JBL seem to prove me wrong! Especially the JBL PB10. It costs less than the competition, but it still provides much more than you can ask or actually pay for. The bass quality is excellent for these subwoofers! So don't underestimate them because of their price or anything, you should definitly buy one if you need AWESOME bass for an AWESOME price.

-Heat... The Worst Enemy Of Music-
*I like bass, and I like it LOUD! That's why I got myself a Cerwin-Vega! and Velodyne subwoofers. However, I have heard many subwoofers. They sounded fine, but when I felt the back-panels after a while, they were burning hot. Some became hot after maybe an hour of relatively loud music, and some took many hours to get to that level. Both of JBL's subwoofers have heat sinks. A best friend... What more can you ask for? This will give you hours of seriously loud bass without overheating. Never underestimate heat, and with JBL, you don't have to worry.

-In Conclusion-
*Without any doubt, JBL's Power Bass subwoofers are simply some of the best that you can find. They will provide you with loud, clean, deep, and heart pounding bass at a price that won't cost you an arm or leg. JBL has been making audio products for decades. So obviously, you can trust them. They incorporate many interesting technologies into their products. And unlike Bose, JBL has earned their reputation. They gained their excellent reputation with subwoofers... Simply by making, excellent subwoofers. There is no doubt that the PB10 and PB12 carry on the tradition of excellence.
