The Bottom Line Anybody who is aware of prejudice around them can learn how to ignore them.

All right, America is the most culturally diverse nation in the world. Now imagine living in Europe, where even your neighbor may be speaking a different language!
I live in a domestic partnership where one is Croatian and the other Bosnian, and people would think there would be no problems. And there are none if you ask us, but our parents don't seem to think so. As a matter of fact, it got so bad in our upbringing that when I met him and really liked him, when he said he was from Bosnia, I laughed in his face, thinking he was playing with me. I mean, he wasn't the "uncivilised, uneducated, rough Bosnian" whom my parents always gave me a picture of. He was a nice, handsome guy. I learned to ignore the background. And just the fact that I had to learn that, me, who always hated prejudice and thought I possessed none, made me so mad at my parents.
My parents wouldn't "hear anything about him until we were at least a year together", so they would be sure it wasn't one of my jokes. Now they know it wasn't.
When he first met them, they were all over him and his accent. They thought it was hicky. He had a very rough time with them before they learned to love him, and I wouldn't want for anyone to have to go through what he had to.
The problem is not just in parents. Parent always want what's best for their kids. But if we want to get rid of the set prejudice, we have to start with parents and the way they bring their children up.
We survived it with our love and by ignoring, but I would've preferred we didn't have to.
Anybody who is aware that all that is happening to them in these cases are pure prejudice can survive and get rid of them. And what's most important, teach their kids not to live with them,
