The credit card shopping at Amazon.Com using their own Amazon Visa incentive is poorly managed.
Amazon's usual array of books, music and other items is vast and quite consumer friendly but the credit card purchasing using their own card is a nuisance.
Amazon issues a $30 incentive to obtain their credit card. You automatically have the card registered and linked to your Amazon account BUT Amazon only provides you with the last 5 digits of your own account. My card never arrived in the mail, lost so to speak. Amazon would not, even with my mother's maiden name, my social security, my date of birth, home number (every detail about me) provide me with my own credit card #. They reissued the card, claiming they would roll all purchases onto the new card and their computer systems failed. The website continues to show the old cancelled card (my credit is excellent by the way--this is not an issue) and Amazon still won't provide me with the new card number. I explained to them that I would be using competitor's cards to make purchases and that their policiess are in essence prohibiting the incentive they offer. I would beware (regardless of security) of any credit card that allows you to make charges to your credit card account under only one vendor, but does not inform you of your own credit card number.
I have never had any other credit card company not provide me with my own information (especially if I needed the card for gas, food, travel etc.) Watch out with this particular situation.
Regardless of what you make of my credit card experiences with Amazon, their system's failure to update the information on the internet with the new cards last five digits, to notify all other Amazon's (UK, JP etc) and their Chase Manhattan bank phone system (which won't let you immediately connect with an operator---it asks you for your full credit card number (which you won't get until 7- ten days) means that if someone has stolen your card, you can't even tell them the exact number in a convenient fashion without comprimising your own security--you have to tell them your mom's name, your date of birth etc, (spoken aloud) yet again they won't tell you your own card number---go figure.....in order to be secure they make the user insecure.
Beware.
