I wanted to read this book as I have long been a fan of Patagonia clothing, and the company's different way of doing business.
This book reads partly like a Business School case study, partly like a novel.
Chouinard gives a romantic history of how a rock-climbing itinerant blacksmith ended up running a major global clothing company with a cult-like clientele, without ever intending to.
His focus is very much on the global environmental crisis, and what companies such as his can do to help, or at least harm less. Unfortunately, he assumes that the reader already agrees that there is a crisis. A reader who might be less ecologically-minded may wonder what all the fuss is about.
However, regardless of one's opinion on global warming, etc. this book teaches a great lesson about the marketing and sales power of creating great quality, innovative products and backing them up with best-in-the-business customer service. It might also make you use your blue box a little more frequently.
All-in-all this is a wonderfully motivating business book, written by reluctant businessman who considers all businessmen to be sleazy "greaseballs."
In a time of history where everything is disposable and all about cheaper! cheaper! cheaper! it's refreshing to read a story that emphasises durable quality.
