Recycle a used Container and Make this Halloween Mummy!

Sep 26 '01

The Bottom Line This Halloween Mummy is a easy craft project to make and a great way to recycle a used container.

By recycling a used container, you can turn an empty cracker box into a handsome Halloween Mummy for trick-or-treat candy, a centerpiece for a Holiday party, or use it as a vase for dried Autumn leaves or Autumn flowers. It can be placed near the door with your trick-or-treat candy in, ready for all those ghosts and goblins on Halloween night. I always get at least 200 kids here, so it will not hold that much candy for me. I just use it as a Halloween decoration.

I used a 1/2 gallon orange juice container. You can make it with a cracker box, juice or milk container or any other box of a similar shape. If you use a 1/2 gallon orange juice or milk container, make sure that you wash the container inside thoroughly.

Please make sure that adult supervision is used, if children are helping with this, because of the hot glue gun.

Materials needed:

Empty container.

1"--1 1/2" wide of torn tea-dyed muslin strips. I bought 1 yard of muslin which can be purchased at Wal-Mart or your fabric store. You can buy less than 1 yard if you desire. Make sure that you tear it into strips, and not cut it into strips.

1 inch wide torn Halloween fabric or Halloween ribbon, long enough to tie around the Mummy container, about 2 feet should be enough, depending how thick you make your Mummy.

2-(1 inch) black buttons for the eyes.

1-(1/2 inch) orange button for the nose.

Hot glue Gun

Glue sticks.

Orange Acrylic Paint for the cheeks.

Sand color paint.

Paintbrush.

Black fine-point permanent marker.

Scissors.

Instructions:

1)--Cut off the top of the container with scissors.

2)--Apply a coat of the sand color paint to the outside of the box and let it dry thoroughly.

3)--Wrap the Muslin strips around the container to cover completely, gluing the beginning and end of each strip with the glue gun. I used almost the whole yard of muslin strips, but you can use less than a yard if you desire.

4)--Ever so lightly apply the orange paint with the brush to make cheeks.

5)--Glue the black buttons between the cheeks for the eyes.

6)--Glue the orange button on for the nose.

7)--Add eyebrows, eyelashes, and a smiley mouth with the black marker.

8)--Tie the Halloween fabric strip about 1 inch up from the bottom of the container, and tie into a knot, or bow if you prefer.

This Mummy will make a cute decoration for Halloween. My Mummy will be sitting on my coffee table in a week or so, with Orange Autumn flowers in it. This is a good way to recycle, and the Mummy can be stored away for next Halloween, ready to use again.

Thanks for reading, and Happy Mummy Making!!
