I know more about Sirius radio than most. I was
with them from their early beginnings and even had
the opportunity to visit their studio and do a guest
radio show. I'd like to think that I have a better
view of their mentality than most, and can offer an
educated opinion on their service vs. XM.
I started as an XM subscriber during the first year
they went live. I found their music programming to
be nothing short of amazing. XM has done everything
they can to get away from the limited playlist mentality
of FM radio. The only problem? At the time, there
were commercials on their music channels. They became
annoying and I switched over to Sirius which at that
time had no commercials on their music channels.
(Note: As of two years ago XM went commercial-free)
Switching over to Sirius was a dreadful decision.
Their music programming was so god-awful, full of
limited playlists and constant repeats, that a large
group of us made a lot of noise on their message boards
begging for the Sirius to improve their music programming.
Sirius contacted me and invited me to their studios
to meet with management. I was horrified to learn
that these were a bunch of old FM people who basically
lacked the vision of XM. Management told me that they
believed Sirius worked best by limiting their playlists
and repeating familiar music as often as possible.
Basically, Sirius is FM radio without the commercials.
Their music channels are plagued with repetition. The
Sirius philosophy is that they want people who step in
their cars to hear only familiar music. Those who choose
to listen to the service all day will undoubtably hear
the same top 100 songs over and over again.
XM radio, on the other hand, is very eclectic with
their music selection. For example, when you listen
to a DECADES channel on XM, you hear ALL the songs that
charted within that decade. On SIRIUS, you will only
hear the most popular selections with only a small
handful of music that may be deemed unpopular.
For this reason, XM listeners will be more likely to
exclaim, "Wow! Haven't heard that song in a while" while
Sirius listeners would likely say, "Wow! Are they playing
that song again?!"
No doubt, Sirius radio excels in talk programming, sports
and (of course) Howard Stern. If those are your reasons
for wanting satellite radio then I can't argue Sirius as
your choice.
On the other hand, if you have a passion for music, you
will be highly disappointed with the programming on Sirius.
