martyinla's Full Review: Miele S4210 Antares Bagged Canister Vacuum
Our new house is all hardwood and stone floors, with a few runners and this is the perfect vacuum for us. With three messy birds, I pull this out often to pick behind them. Its easier and way faster than dealing with our Rhomba!
I've always had canister vacuums, 2 from Sears and before that a Hoover. I was pretty much resigned to replacing the Sears ones every few years - they tended to need something fixed all the time. At first I almost got a Bosch, but I checked out the one at Sears and it seemed to be poorly made and they haven't been making them very long. I didn't think I could get a Miele for under $1000 (no way!).
This Miele is perfect as it weighs next to nothing, easily follows me around, and stores very easily. Wish it had a longer cord though, but I'm dealing with that. I did get the $50 wide brush that literaly floats (with the help of little wheels) over the floor.
At first I was dissappointed at the tiny tiny attachments (Barbie size), but they work ok and fit right on a caddy. The telescopic handle lets you extend to get spider webs etc on the ceiling, or minimize to store the Miele in a small space. I also got a Hepa Filter from the dealer for another $50. I justified this $350 and $100 in extras plus tax as we don't have a house keeper. Have used it for a 1-1/2 months about every other day in our 1800 sq' home. But, have yet to empty the fairly expensive bag which keeps the smell of vacuumed whatever totally under control.
The Miele is supposed to be super quite, but its not that quite unless you turn the suction down, which I don't for normal floors. It has great suction and with its little wheels is easy to manuver, even backwards. The added optional wide brush makes it quick and easy to get under and around beds, and other low furniture. The exhaust goes up instead of behind it so your not pushing not-yet vacuumed dust all over the place.
Bottom line, I vacuum more as its easy to pull out and get around the house with. Vacuuming is quick and easy with this attractive new friend. Although its expensive because its made in Germany, it'll hold up cause its made in Germany.
I don't think I'd get this for carpeted home - I'd want the beater bar and the small wheels would probably not work well in thick carpet.
UPDATE 4/18/06
I was using our old Sears vacuum to clean out the fireplace when it got pluged up. I attached the Miele to the end of the Sears hose and it unplugged in a flash. Also noticed that where the Sears hose has angels that make it impossible to see down and difficult to clean out, the Miele hose can be easily taken apart to see the problem and shove a poll down to push it out. Great design. I realized how much heavier the Sears cannister vacuum is compared to the Miele.
Also, we got a dog about 2 months ago that sheds big time. Now I realllllly like the Miele!
