| pdadkins's Full Review: Eureka Smart 4870DT Bagged Upright Vacuum |
I'm a serious researcher, so after reading Consumer Reports rankings and online ratings, I visited Sears and tried out tops pics. I bought the burgundy version of this vacuum yesterday after finally giving up on my useless Dirt Devil Featherlite. I was able to put it together in about 5 minutes while playing with my infant son. After putting the babe to bed, I vacuumed the whole house (2000 sq. ft., carpet and tile, 2 cats). The unit was quiet enough that I did not disturb my son's slumber, and I could still hear the baby monitor clearly enough to hear the air purifier in his room! After one pass through the house, the vacuum bag was 1/3 full, even though our house has been vacuumed TWICE in the past week (once with our maid service's Oreck, and once with our crummy Dirt Devil). Thanks to the long cord, I only had to change electrical outlets once for the whole house. Our very old, worn carpet looks better than it has since we moved in, and the texture was improved to the point that I can now see stains that were previously hidden in the carpet's poor texture.
I did not find the unit to be too heavy--instead, it felt nice and sturdy, and glided well on noiseless wheels. The foot pedal was stiffer than my previous vacuum, but I could still depress it barefoot. (Hint: Step on the outside edge of the pedal). A second press of the pedal laid the vacuum almost flat to go under furniture. The width of the vacuum prevented it from going under some chairs, but my previous, smaller vacuum was too tall to fit underneath anyway.
And best of all, I vacuumed the house without sneezing, wheezing, or rubbing my eyes. With my allergies and asthma, I've never been able to do that!
I have not used the attachments yet, but I'm pleased that they are firmly held on the vacuum and do not fall off or shift around during normal cleaning.
So far, I would highly recommend this vacuum to anyone in a one-story home or apartment or to those with severe allergies. It's a little heavy to lug up and down stairs, but people in 2-story homes are often better off with a canister vac anyway.
Update: May 11, 2006
I still LOVE this vacuum! At one point, I was disappointed that it was losing suction, but then I realized that the bag was _completely_ full (after only 3 or 4 uses!) When I changed the bag, the super suction was back in full force.
I'm enjoying the attachments--they are easy to use and store, and the turbo claw thing is amazing on cat hair. Previously, I would pull out my red, hand-held Dirt Devil Turbo to do the furniture (and I still do for small messes) but now I can do the furniture and curtains and such while vacuuming the carpet. The attachment hose doesn't stretch as far as my previous vacuum, but then again, the Eureka doesn't tip over when using the hose like my previous one did.
Now that my son is older, I'm pleased that this vacuum is so quiet that it doesn't scare him. He crawls after me as I clean the house and laughs every time I start up the vacuum.
And finally, my mom liked my Eureka Smart Vac so well that she bought one of her own to clean the second floor of her house. She has rheumatoid arthritis in her hands, feet, and back, and she had no problem pushing and pulling this vacuum.
