WV Wesleyan is located in the small, rolling hills of Upshur Country West Virginia, in the City of Buckhannon. It is 2hrs from Pittsburgh, 1.5hrs from Charleston, 90mins from Wheeling, and 40mins from Morgantown.
Now, you must get one thing straight: Buckhannon is small. I don't mean that you won't find something to do here, because you will, but you might have to look around. The town is made up of a many fast food restaurants and pizzeria's, some sit-down restaurants, a Walmart and a Sheetz. That's it. If you are looking for a BonTon or an Express, this is not the place for you. Sorry.
The town is built around that college. That's something to keep in mind. A lot of places around Buckhannon give discounts to students and teachers from the school. It can be a very big saver.
The college itself is composed of just under 1500 students and just under 150 full/part time faculty. It has a wide variety of majors. Mostly, it is known for it's Business, Biology and Theater programs. I am a Biology/International Business double major, so I will be able to give you an in depth view into these two areas. The college is set on 100 square acres of land. It is beautifully landscaped, and looks awesome at night and in the snow. If you visit the college, make sure to stay till nightfall. This is one reason I picked it, among other things.
The biology and business programs both have very outstanding success and great placement for jobs. Many students have graduated and gone on to NASA, Microsoft, and great graduate schools like Standford, Harvard, and WVU. The schools placement rate is above 75%, which is outstanding.
The teachers at Wesleyan are amazing. They will go out of their way to help you if you need it, but with an average class ratio of 15:1, you may find you don't really need it. Teachers utilize all the technology that the school offers. Most of the lessons are taught through the use of power points and projectors; yet, others still find it useful to fill the chalk board up with scribbles. Either way, bringing a laptop to class might not be the best idea, considering there is wireless access all over campus, and AOL IM is an easy distraction.
The freshmen dorms are a little small, but as with most school, the longer you stay at the college, the better the rooms get. That is the situation here at Wesleyan. The quad, this is where freshmen live for their first year, is a dry area on campus. There are usually 25 residents to a floor in 3 dorms, one of which is co-ed. After your first year, you get your choice of 5 upper class dorms. Room range from tiny to huge (the specifics can be found on the college page). Some of them even come with their own bathroom, which is neat.
Let's talk about the food. There are some choices here at Wesleyan. First, we have the Cat's Claw. By far this place offers the best food. You get $100.00 on your ID card every semester, and you can spend it here. They offer stuff that you would find at Bob Evan's...and it tastes like it too. YUM! Next, is Sunny Bucks. This is a little 'market' type thingy. You can buy canned food, cards, Honey Buns, etc...you can also use your $100 to buy stuff here. Lastly is Aladdin. This is the school's cafeteria. It offers a wide rang of food at each meal, and usually changes on a set schedule! Wednesday is chicken patty day, and Monday is chicken nugget day!!!
Wesleyan offers a wide range of activities, sporting teams, and opportunities. I will not go into these, because I fear if I did, there would be no need for you to visit us. Trust me, you will like it here. I doubted heavily when I got here, but it has grown on me. I can't imagine myself anywhere else. Please, if you are at all interested in coming, e-mail me: feel free to ask questions and such. One thing I recommend is visiting us. Take a tour, heck, you might even get me as your tour guide. One thing I can say, though, is: Wesleyan is defiantly my 'home among the hills!'
