Pros: SMASH SMASH SMASH mindless entertainment and great graphics.
Cons: nightime missions are a bit dark.
The Bottom Line: I like serious difficult games but this was a nice break. It was a lot of fun to make it through the levels smashing EVERYTHING in my path.
Wow! I didn't know if I would like this game but I was amazed at my enjoyment. Being a longtime fan of the Hulk (watched the original Hulk in the 80's when I was a kid) I was excited to get the chance to be him in this game. This game is not overly hard so some serious gamers might be turned off but not me! It was nice to take a break from serious games and SMASH STUFF!!!!
my demographics as a gameplayer
In my late 20's, prefer shooting and strategy games, play games over 5 hours a week (if there is a good game in the house), get my games from Gamefly, consider myself an experienced gamer and very aware of what makes a bad game programming wise.
Game Objective/Store
Hulk the game takes place takes place one year after the events in Hulk the movie. Bruce Jenner must fight powerful forces of the Leader who is using Bruce Jenners powers in a bad way to unleash terrible forces. There are 30 levels and most involve protecting structures. He battles stealth bombers, tanks, intense robots, big monsters, and more. When the Hulk successfully completes his missions he is bolstered with more powerful moves to fight his enemies and protect what needs to be protected. The hulks life runs out when something he is to protect is destroyed.
Graphics, Screenshots, overall appearance
The movement of hulks body is very agile and well programmed. The scenery in the desert scenes is close to the movie. You can also pick different shorts for hulk to wear which is fun. I had him in shorts made from the British Flag for half of the game. It is easy to pan around and see the whole spectrum of what you are fighting and protecting. The only thing I didn't like about the game was the missions that were during the night. They tended to be a little too dark and could have been lit up a bit more. This does add to the challenge but I preferred the missions that were during the daylight.
Missions, Moves, Power
The overall power of the hulk is amazing. Each time you complete a mission you get to access new moves. There are drop kicks, power jumps, mass throwing powers, and you can even throw a fireball. When the hulk jumps high into the air he can come down and smash what is below him. When he hits the ground the whole thing shakes and the graphics with this move are AWESOME. There are several moves and each time you aquire a new one there is an easy quick tutorial on the move before you get back into the game. I thought the flow of that was perfect. Some of the missions are harder than the others. I would say there is a nice transition from hard ones to less hard ones. You can get kind of a break after a super hard mission. The mass power of the hulk is absolutely staggering and I am very IMPRESSED. Some of it was very close to the movie. For example, picking up a tank by the gun and twirling it around and around before hurling it at something was AWESOME! There are a few levels called Banner levels and they are the most difficult. They are games that will play with your head. I got stuck on one but was able to get cheat codes online to get through it, if you want you can entirely skip it. Don't let the banner levels get you down!
Sound
I loved the overall sound of the game because it was not obtrusive like some games. There is light music changing with the mood and threat level in the background. Mostly you can hear the hulk grown and roar which is cool. You can also hear your enemies speaking. The narratives between scenes are nice too. I felt the music kept the intensity of the smashing level.
Final Thoughts
NOTHING is unsmashable. You can see a bustop which is no threat to you and SMASH IT. You can smash a bus, then pick it up and throw it as a weapon!! This game is Ultimate destruction. At first I missed having shooting power but 1/3 into the game I was really into the smashing and jumping that I could do. It was also an addicting game. I would be out and about and see something that hulk smashes in the game - I would want to get home and finish smashing. I did not lose interest and the game was a finisher! Call me easily entertained but I take games seriously and I really found this was a nice break in between some of the super hard games I have been playing. If you want some mindless smashing and loved the Hulk as a kid you will LOVE this game.
