Pros:Rotating plug; doesn't just mask odors: actually freshens room; reasonable price; scents not heavy.
Cons:Scents come on strong at first, then mellow, even if set to "low."
The Bottom Line: This is a reasonably-priced scented oil air freshener with features that make it stand out from the rest of the pack.
About a month ago, I received the Febreze NOTICEables air freshener to try, courtesy of Hass MS&L, in exchange for an honest review of the product.
I must admit, I've tried plug-in scented oil air fresheners before. I've tried the commonplace ones that you can buy in the supermarket and I've even received the expensive kind from Bath and Body works. I've been attracted by the scents and the idea of a constantly pleasant-smelling home. However, I've found that although I'll lay out the cash to buy the starter kit for an air freshener system, I never buy refills. Sometimes the scents turned out to be too heavy or refills were too expensive. In the end, these products succeeded in masking odor, but they never freshened my rooms. Instead of buying refills, I'd resort to the old "Lysol in the air" fix for the bathroom or "perfume in the bedroom" to freshen up the room.
Enter Febreze NOTICEables. At first glance, it looks like other scented-oil air fresheners: it has a cartridge that easily snaps into a holder and plugs into an outlet. Look closer, though and you'll notice that the cartridge has two chambers. Instead of one constant scent, the air freshener alternates between two complimentary-scented oils. Here's what the company says (on their website, www.febreze.com):
"Over time you can get used to just one scent, but with NOTICEables you can give your home long lasting freshness...A soft green light will indicate which scent is working as it automatically alternates between two complementary scents throughout the day to continuously refresh your senses."
I guess it's interesting that there is a little green light to indicate that you are "experiencing" a new scent, but once you take the cartridge out of the package, you aren't sure which scent you're "experiencing" anyway.
I couldn't really tell the difference between the two scents. I received Morning Walk & Cleansing Rain. At first, I put the air freshener in my bathroom, because those seemed like "bathroom" scents to me, something I wouldn't want to have in my bedroom. I set the air freshener to the "low" setting. I appreciated that I could control the amount of scent that came out of the product---some other air fresheners won't allow you to do this (including the expensive Bath and Body Works air freshener), and the result is an overpowering scent.
I was pleased with the way the air freshener performed: there was a noticeable, pleasant, fresh smell in my bathroom. Admittedly, though, it was a bit strong for me that first day, even though it was on the "low" setting.
I found myself moving the air freshener around in my house because I wanted to freshen other rooms. I moved the unit into my guest bathroom when we had a football party, and I was pleased at how quickly the scent spread in the bathroom.
Besides the two scents, another feature of this air freshener system really stands out from the rest: a rotating plug. This is absolutely essential for my house since almost all of my outlets are upside-down! A conventional scented oil air freshener with a stationary plug simply WOULD NOT work in my house (the air freshener would plug in upside-down, and you simply can't have that---the oil would leak out and make a mess and the whole thing would be a fire hazard!). I absolutely LOVED that the designers of Febreze NOTICEables really thought about the design of the product and how the consumer would use it. Some of us have weird, horizontal outlets in our kitchens or bathrooms. This product will fit in ANY outlet because you can just rotate the plug around. I can use this product in any outlet in my home (not just the ones the builder installed correctly), which is a great incentive for me to continue using this product.
I was definitely pleased with how this air freshener performed in the bathroom. However, I noticed that my bedroom was smelling a little musty (hey, it is winter and all, so the rooms don't get aired out much). As I mentioned before, I was hesitant to try the Morning Walk & Cleansing Rain scents in my room because I didn't want it to smell too "bathroomy" in there, but I really wanted something to relieve the mustiness in the room.
The air freshener had been running in my bathroom for about two weeks before I put it in my bedroom, and I noticed that the scent wasn't overwhelming anymore. While it was pervasive, it wasn't as intense as the first day I put it in the bathroom (I still had it set to "low"). After a few hours in my bedroom, I was pleasantly surprised to note that not only did it emit a pleasant smell, but it actually seemed to freshen the room! The smell in the bedroom wasn't heavy. In my experience, scented-oil air fresheners can make the scent really hang in the air. When I've used other brands of scented oil air fresheners, I've actually unplugged them after they've run a few hours because the scent is overwhelming. I've had the Febreze NOTICEables air freshener in my bedroom now for two weeks and I haven't unplugged it once. Now I'll have to buy two more units for my bathrooms because I REFUSE to move the unit I have back into the bathroom!
Besides Morning Walk & Cleansing Rain, there are four other scent duos for the Febreze NOTICEables air freshener. I am anxious to try Pink Magnolia & Jasmine Breeze. Those are scents you don't typically see for scented oil air fresheners. Sure, they have the standard Vanilla scents, as well as "CALYPSO BREEZE & HAWAIIAN PARADISE," "CLOTHESLINE BREEZE & MEADOW SONGS" (man, who comes up with the names for these things? Just tell me what these things SMELL like!).
