How to Cut your (unwilling) Dog's Nails!

Oct 04 '01

The Bottom Line Cutting your dog's nails doesn't have to be a chore - as long as you regularly touch the dog's paws, and follow these steps.

I have a puppy.

She's 60 pounds, 5 months old.

She's a Rottweiller. She doesn't like to have her nails cut.

For the first five or so minutes, I usually try coaxing her, and telling her how much I love. "Come on, Katie. Mommy loves you. Mommy needs to cut your nails so you don't hurt people when you jump up." When I first got Katie, I read a lot of Veterinarian books, and a lot of "Dog How-To" books. One of the general common points was that you need to talk to your dog. They can't understand (for the most part) what you're saying. It's the fact that you are treating them like *somebody* by talking to them. Say anything, anything at all, for the dog to relax.

When you realize that doesn't automatically get the dog to roll over and allow the pedicure, get out the treats. If they are busy chewing, and being rewarded, they are more likely to think that you aren't going to do some awful punishment.

With enough rubbing, coaxing, and sweet talk, my dog eventually calms down, and will let me get it over with. I don't think I have an abnormal dog. The entire process takes about 20 minutes for me.

Some other tips:
________________

-- The master should definitely do the nail cutting. (Or be there if you take it to a Vet or professional groomer.)

-- You should also regularly touch your dog's paws... Your dog will be less likely to pull away if he/she often has their paws touched. (This goes the same for the teeth, by the way. You should often stick your fingers around the gum line, in case anything ever gets lodged in. If you haven't already done this, don't start with your 5 year old, guard dog pitbull. But, you do want your dog to trust you enough to be able to do anything.)
