Pros: Puts the smack-down on grease and oil, antibacterial and grease-cutting, smells-nice, lasts quite a while.
Cons: Pump head doesn't rise up occasionally forcing you to hold bottle and manually pull up.
The Bottom Line: For all around dishwashing duties this is the soap to beat. Dawn Direct Foam is a standout degreaser and one bottle lasts a long time. Two thumbs way up!

----- A new day has Dawned -----
I can't believe it's come down to this, I'm actually reviewing dish soap! I guess when a product really makes an impression it's worth sharing with others, right? Okay, on to the review.
The dishwashing duties in my family were always rotated around among different family members, for this reason there were several different bottles of dishsoap under the sink. My personal favorite was the old-school blue Dawn dishwashing liquid that's been around forever. While watching a movie on TV I happened to see this goofball yet eyecatching commercial for Dawn Direct Foam featuring a foamy-looking vacuum cleaner running around dishes and sucking up grease. While grease isn't a huge problem with most of my dishes, the idea of a foaming cleanser really sounded like a good idea.
While shopping recently I saw a display filled with Direct Foam and checked out the bottle closer. To my surprise I saw it recommended as not only dishwashing liquid but as antibacterial hand soap. Two cleaners in one pump bottle... I'm sold!
----- Using Direct Foam -----
For someone who's never used a dishwasher, using one pump to clean a whole sink of dishes is quite a claim. Procter & Gamble claim their Direct Foam pump bottles hold 250 pumps of foam and can clean a sinkload with just one pump.
For starters you'll need a clean, relatively dry sponge and slightly pre-soaked dishes (to loosen hardened deposits). I personally use two good pumps of foam on my sponge, this seems to last longer and maintain the soapiness of my sponge. Start scrubbing your dishes just as you normally do and you'll soon notice the foam captures oily deposits and debris instead of just smearing them around on your plate. P&G states that "Dawn Direct Foam actually breaks the grease into tiny particles and absorbs them, locking them into the foam. I'm not sure how this happens, but I can say it's much easier to see remaining dirty spots on your dishes without the smears and spots of grease being wiped around.
For everyday cooking oil, butter and margarine deposits, and greasy casserole pans, Dawn Direct Foam works exactly as described. If you leave your greasy dishes in the sink before cleaning, squirt a pump or two in the sink before you leave. With Dawn Foam mixed in the water you'll find the oily deposits will release and all you need to do is wipe the dishes down with a soapy sponge before rinsing.
In my many years of dishwashing I've picked up a bad habit that doesn't work well when using Direct Foam. I always leave the water running on medium hot and run it over each dish before scrubbing with the sponge. You don't want to do this with Direct Foam as you'll end up using more soap... a lot more. Even though it goes against the way I've always done it I've started using the sponge on my dishes without pre-rinsing them first. Pre-soaking dishes in hot water is a good idea, but not necessary.
----- Direct Foam as a handsoap -----
I'm using the Citrus Kick scent Direct Foam which can be also be used as a hand soap. I do recommend using this for cleaning your hands after working with oily substances, food products including meat, or other household jobs due to it's excellent grease-cutting abilities and antibacterial properties. However, I have to agree with another Epinions member and not recommend Direct Foam for everyday handwashing. Over time it will remove much of the natural oils from your skin and leave it quite dry, especially in the winter months. If you keep a moisturizing lotion nearby this effect can be greatly reduced and you may find you like it as a handsoap for all occasions.
----- Bottom Line -----
I must give Procter & Gamble credit on this one, their advertising scored as a hit with me and I'll be buying Direct Foam as my dishwashing liquid from now on. I've only had experience with the Citrus Kick scent, and while it's actually quite mild the scent is very nice. I'm not sure what the other two smell like, although apparently not all Direct Foam scents are recommended for handwashing.
If you do all or some of your dishes by hand, this liquid-foaming soap could save you a lot of time. If you're not convinced to try it yet, there's quite a few good coupons out there as this product is quite new. Give it a try for yourself and I know you'll like it as much as I do.
