Pros:good for office type & berber carpeting
Cons:heavy, noisy, no filtration, too cumbersome
The Bottom Line: If you have office or berber type carpet, GET IT! If you want to vacuum medium to thick carpet, hardwood floors furniture & other delicate items, DON'T get it!

You'll get a great upper body workout without going to the gym with this machine! This is NOT a vacuum for those with neck or back problems.....
I can't think of many pros for the Royal, so if you don't want to read negative statements, don't read this opinion.
I purchased this machine about 1 year ago on the advice of a friend. I hated it & have traded it in for a Miele. Here are my findings:

CARPET - I have 2 dogs & 1 cat. My family room carpet is medium thickness like that found in most homes, these days. After I vacuumed the floor, I still found dog hair stuck in the carpet. I would have to vacuum the same spot several times & vacuum in an overlapping manner to pick up all the hair. It made me wonder if the vacuum was really efficient in picking up all the dirt. My bedroom carpet is thick & I struggled to vacuum it. Even my 6' - 200lb friend found it tough to push across that carpet. The royal has a height adjustment, but no height worked. I ended up with shoulder aches & neck aches after vacuuming.

FLOORS - I have hardwood floors & the beater bar scratched it. You have to open the front panel on the head of the vacuum & disconnect the belt to stop the beater bars. This is a germy task as all the dirt you vacuum up passes by this belt. YUCK!

ODOR - I thought someone had told me that this vacuum had a great filtration system. Well, there was a pretty nasty odor coming out of it whenever I vacuumed. I don't think the filtration was very good.

DURABILITY - This vacuum is ALL METAL. Of course it's durable!! Of course it'll last a life time! But what good is a lifetime vacuum if it just sits in the closet because it's so difficult to use?! Besides that, it's very heavy.

WHEELS - They say it has big wide wheels for stability. Well, I didn't find it very stable when wheeling on 2 wheels from room to room. It kept tipping over.

SUCTION - The suction is GREAT!.....if you have low carpets. Which explains why it didn't work for me. You need airflow through the head for PROPER suction. The Royal sucked so hard that it plastered down & got stuck to one spot on my carpet which was why it was so difficult to push it. This is also why there was always dog hair left in the carpet....no airflow for the machine to suck it up.

BELT - You have to change the belt every 2 months. Think about it. The dirt you vacuum up goes right past the belt & all that dirt & grime wears the belt down. Not only that, but this is the outlet that you have to open up everytime you want to use an attachment....you have to touch that dirty belt. Doesn't seem to clean to me! It's also too cumbersome.

CORD - The cord is manual, so everytime you want to vacuum, you have to unwind it & then rewind it back up....or, just bundle it up & throw it in the corner.

FURNITURE, DRAPES, ETC., - My royal didn't come with any attachments, but having to mess with that front panel & that belt made me not want to get attachments. It also doesn't have any speed controls. Just SUCK!! Can you imagine vacuuming your drapes with the same suction power you use on your floors? (good-bye drapes! good-bye area rug!) I never vacuumed my drapes with this vacuum, so this is pure conjecture, but I did vacuum my area rug with fringe....no fringe left!

I gave up & bought a Miele.
