| lorrin's Full Review: NEC SuperScript 870 Laser Printer |
I've had the NEC SuperScript for quite a few years now and until recently I have been pleased with it. Attached directly to my old Win98 machine it worked very well. I enjoyed the many useful features (draft mode, multiple pages on a sheet, double sided printing assistance). It's two shortcomings were that the paper feed sometimes runs the paper through at a slight angle and that the control panel (with just 4 LEDs and a single button) is cryptic.
However, now that I'm running Windows 2000, I'm am very disappointed with the printer. The Win2k drivers lack most of the features of the Win 9x drivers. More importantly, they do not work. I frequently print a whole document and find out that 90% of the text on each page didn't print.
Note: I very very rarely have problems w/ jams, but I only rated the paper handling "good" because the paper often runs through at a slight angle.
---UPDATE Feb '03: I have been using the "Minolta PageWorks 8L" driver under Windows 2000 for the past 2 years, and it is working well enough. (The Minolta printer was one of the few other printers based on PrintGear). Again, none of the snazzy features but 95% of the time it works which is more than I can say for NEC's Win2k drivers. The printer itself continues to work; it has developed a thin dark streak on the side of the page but as I have yet to replace the photoconductor drum I suppose this is to be expected.
