Blue Man Group - Who Thinks Up This Stuff?Oct 7, 2001 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Not a play, not a musical, not a concert...what is it? The Blue Man does not speak, but he IS heard. You must see BMG at least once. Not a play, not a musical, not a concert...what is it? My wife and I saw the 4:00 p.m. show yesterday at the Briar Street Theater on N. Halsted in Chicago. Traffic was horrendous and we arrived a few minutes late. Parking is available on the weekends at a bank a few dozen yards north of the theater. As we rushed in the staff was friendly and very helpful in getting us to our seats in the dark theater. I'd like to meet the guys(Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton, and Chris Wink)who first developed this concept...as they were obviously dropped as babies, perhaps repeatedly. The first thing that struck me...the Blue Man DOES NOT talk, but still communicates volumes to the audience and to each other. This was most apparent when a young lady was pulled on stage to engage in an increasingly complex (and increasingly hilarious) interaction with the Blue Men that involved Twinkies. There were kids of all ages in attendance. The only thing that would make me hesitate to bring small kids is one utterance of the F-word by a voice-over. Other than that, I think most kids over age 10 would enjoy the show. There is NO down time throughout the show. There is always something going on and there is no way to catch everything that is happening. The Blue Men transition easily from catching marshmallows in their mouths to hurling items with big rubber band slingshots (ala` Wile E. Coyote), to playing tubes with paddles - all the while with a live band or voice overs or film vignettes playing. For those of you who need glasses to read - be sure to have them with you for there is quite a bit of information you'll miss if you can't see the signs. I have purposely tried to avoid describing what happens in detail, because part of the joy of this show is that you are never sure of what's going to happen next. There is the opportunity for everyone in the audience to participate (from their seats) on several occasions. After the show, the Blue Men are at the doors to greet (as only a Blue Man would) fans in silence. They will pose for photos, and "autograph" playbills by kissing them with their blue lips. At our show, a painting created on stage was available for sale - I'm a sucker for this kind of unique stuff - so I bought it. When I offered a Blue Man a pen to autograph it, without saying a word, he grabbed the painting and jammed his forehead onto the back of the canvas, leaving a huge cobalt blue swipe. Audio CDs,DVDs shirts etc are also available and the prices are not unreasonable. After reading several reviews and talking to people that have seen the show, I had very high expectations...and I was NOT disappointed. I'll be back. My wife loved it and says she'd go again in a heartbeat. So that's two thumbs up! |
