More important considerations (Reply to this comment)

The main reason to pick a good turntable isn't skipping. If skipping is your main concern, pick a Vestax A series, the straight tonearm is almost impossible to skip.
The main reason to pick a good table is wow and flutter. Basically, if you have a cheap table, it won't spin the record at an absolutely constant speed. So by the time you get good enough to beatmatch on most mixes, you'll find the records changing pitch just slightly and your mix going off beat thru no fault of your own. This is simply not acceptable, and is the main reason people upgrade to a technics or high-end vestax (more beloved by the scratching hip-hop community than trance heads). It's like having a really cheap guitar, you will always be limited by what you're working with and will spend most of your time compensating for your equipment's faults. If you want to get into mixing cheaply and avoid this problem, go with a low-end gemini cd mixing package. The interface sucks compared to handling vinyl directly, but it will force you to mainly use the pitch control (which is good) and since you're playing cds, they will play at exactly the pitch they're supposed to. You can find package deals for 2 gemini cdj-1100's and an acceptable basic mixer (like maybe a ps-525) for about $600. Check hollywooddj.com. In my opinion it's a better start, you avoid the newbie problem of relying on touching the records, and you avoid flutter. It sucks for scratching, but is fine for most trance, house, techno, etc.
If you use vinyl you need a table that will spin records at an exactly consistent speed, and that costs.
