Bumping or crystal clear, a simple breakdown
Oct 08 '01
The Bottom Line Well if you're looking for thump almost anything will suffice. In searching for clarity, remember bigger is absolutely not better, airspace is key.
Agreed many wish to cruise down the road announcing to all that their system bumps, and that is easily accomplished. On the other hand clarity is a much more sophisticated task.
Let's say, for example, you want to "blow" away your friends with a loud system, you can easily achieve this by purchasing any JL, Kicker, Mmats, etc... 12" or larger sub running at or above RMS (continuous power).
Me, on the other hand, prefer to hear the snare rattle from the hit of the bass drum while still "thumping". To achieve such, first look at your airspace{room in the vehicle)unless you have an Explorer or larger a 10" sub is plenty(surprisingly it will rattle you), run a notable company amplifier that doesn't exceed your speaker RMS output. Be sure it isn't bandpass or a ported box,(they limit frequency travel)and aim it away from the front. If you follow these suggestions you will be pleasantly surprised, example; my system consists of a MB Quart 10" competition sub and a '97 PPI art series A200 amp. Although I am not well versed in the specific specs, I have intrigued many with my system, including the pro shop I purchase my components from. The owner actually shows off my system to all new employees.
