The Bottom Line Avoid Yahoo auctions. There is too much drop-shipping "spam", off catagory posts and dishonest sellers.

Ok, I admit, I used to love the yahoo auctions.... a couple of years ago when I was just starting out as a custom jeweler, there were months that the things I sold on yahoo helped pay the bills....
Then it happened.... some jerk started giving lectures on how you could get rich using yahoo auctions (specifically because they were free to post on) by doing something called "drop-shipping" (thats where you have a catalog for a company, scan in the pictures, raise the prices and sell them as if you were the actual supplier). to make matters worse, this person also told people to use a special program that will automatically post their items to the various catagories (or, to be more exact, to ALL the catagories)
Its sorta like the "spam" you receive in your email.
you go to a catagory, for example "loose gemstones, emerald" and you will find it filled with thousands of "cookie-cutter" auctions for the same few dozen items. (including VCR's, quilting material, costume jewelry, auto parts and many other items that have absolutely nothing to do loose gemstones, let alone emeralds.
before I finally gave up on it as a complete waste of time I was spending several minutes searching through the pages to find a single item that actually matched the catagory it was offered in.
I contacted yahoo several times to complain about this (after all... the items "I" was posting were being buried beneath a avalanche of spam-type items with pictures that still have the catalog page number in the corner.)
when Yahoo finally decided to respond (several months later) they told me that because it was a "free service" they cannot afford the employees it would take to make sure that people did not abuse the system.
I promptly wrote back that it shouldnt be that difficult to make what would be, in essence, a "spam filter" to look for multiple postings to multiple catagories that are all worded the same and using the same picture.
that was 7 months ago...still no response and still tons of "spam"
In my opinion yahoo auctions is a waste of time and will continue to be so until they (yahoo) start clamping down some restrictions on what is posted. (and this little rant of mine doesnt even take into account all the dishonest people using it to run scams and rip people off...)
